The movie starts in a nursing home with Duke reading to an older woman, whose memory is slipping from her more and more every day. Duke reads the story of two lovers who meet in the south at a carnival. The story dates back to the summer of 1940, on Seabrook Island, South Carolina. Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) is a high school girl from a wealthy family spending the summer in Seabrook. Noah is the hard working, dirt-poor local boy. After Noah's several attempts to go on a date with Allie, she finally agrees, resulting in both of them falling in love with each other over the summer. Shockingly, Allies parents do not approve and try to split the two up, seemingly forever. Obviously, weve seen this thousand of times before. What make it work this time are good performances from the leads, and the fact that Notebooks premise doesnt take up the entire two hours. In fact, it takes up only the first half hour to forty-five minutes. The two spend the whole summer together but Allie is forced to move and go to college although she was willing to give it up for Noah. Allie is forced to leave Seabrook a week earlier than planned, leaving her unable to say goodbye to her beloved Noah.. After Allies parents split them up the relationship is over. For seven years the two never cross paths until Noah coincidentally sees her in the street. But before he can open his

mouth, he sees shes living a fine life without him, complete with a smarmy businessman fianc Lon (James Marsden). After waiting several years for Noah to write to her, Allie becomes engaged to Lon. Actually Noah writes Allie 365 letters but she never gets them. Noah's picture catches Allie's eye. He is standing in front of a fully restored, 200 year old home. The article is filled with praise for his accomplishments. Allie's heart nearly bursts. The last time she saw this house it was a rotted decaying shamble. She stood enfolded in Noah's arms in the great entryway and listened to his plans to buy and restore this house. Just the way she wanted it. With her love for Noah still alive, the picture pulls at her heart. She has to go back, see if Noah is okay, and tell him about her marriage. They both think the echo deep in their hearts, the one that has lasted all these years, is not shared by the other. Allie is then forced to choose between her fianc and her first love. She chooses Noah, her first love. Throughout the movie, in between the scenes of Noah and Allie are scenes of an elderly man reading their story in a nursing home to an elderly woman slowly losing her memory. Guess what he was reading the story from a notebook which he used to write when young. It is revealed that she is Allie and he is the one she chose. He is Noah. Allie has developed Dementia. They die in each other's arms. The Notebook is a gentle romantic tale in the midst of blockbuster action films and goofball comedies. The Notebook isnt just a film for women. Its a movie for anyone who wants to get lost in a beautiful story, for anyone who believes romance is still alive on film.
