Joint Meeting PNBOA & SOWB Bellevue College Saturday October 23th 2010 9:00am 1.

Mike Lloyd / Tim Gately- Reviewed why we are having both associations register as one unit ..to increase state allocations. We may have to go down the respective varsity list to cover state this year. 174 officials needed the first and second rounds state wide. Remember if you do college, be sure to use high school mechanics. Lots of members have been to camps this past year to improve. PSA will be on line this year. PNBOA.org for the PNBOA Game Assign for SOWB Who works rec ball? Be professional. Get up and down the court. Please call tight and early. 2. Dan Phelps: SOWB meeting dates online. SOWB is having a coaches forum before the first meeting. SOWB is working to upgrade website and will be recruiting members to help out. 3. Woody- PNBOA Elections this year. Send in your interest to Woody by December 15th. 4. Special Guest- Dog Sturdivan Started out in the PNBOA 25 years ago. A varsity official asked, What are you doing You need to go to camp to improve. Even if you are not interested in getting into college officiating, listen to the college guys. They will have something that will help you. It worked for me. We can teach a person to be a good ref, but we can t teach an official to be a good person. Successful officials are good people. Get your priorities correct. Officiating is hard on relationships and your job. You have to know what will work with you. Things we can control. Have you been to the gym? Does your uniform fit? Image is very important. If one does not have a good appearance, a person that knows nothing about basketball will be able to know if you can officiate or not.

I kicked one rule and was booted from Division one. You need to know the rules and the mechanics. Evaluations should be more about philosophy. You need to work state before you officiate CC ball. You need to work a CC tournament before going to 4 year. If you are not, you are not in the top ranks and can t expect to rise and it definitely will be hard to stay at that level. If you want to go to a Division 2 game, call one of the college officials and they can reserve you a ticket so you can come and learn. Questions: What rule did I kick 5 sec closely guarded in the backcourt How do you deal with rude coaches- Ignoring and/or talking does not work for everybody. Can t explain every call. Be personal. Doug does not use the Technical Foul to control games. Has only called 5 in the last 10 years. He controls the game by officiating. You invest so much time to get to a level, make one mistake and they take you down. Doug was at a camp and ranked 3rd out 144 and did not get hired by a division 1 assignor. Worry about what you can control. D-1 is very competitive and there are a lot of people. 5. Rules and Mechanics- Doug Miller, Julie Vanni, Kelly Fetterly

Rule Changes: If you suspect a concussion, that player must be removed. Headbands are under the color rule: white, beige, black or team color. Everybody has to be in the same color. A wrist band or a headband may have one manufacturer s logo or school mascot. All headbands do not have to have the same logo. Rule 10.3.1 Must remain in the bench area during play. Example free throw at the end the 2nd quarter after time is gone from clock. Editorial comments- facemask needs to be molded to fit player s face. Knee braces are not required to have padding. Opponents cannot call time out if the ball is at the disposal of the thro- in team after a basket if the official has started their count. Throw in correction error WIAA mercy rule: 40 points or more in the second half will result in having a running clock for the remainder of the second half. This is a WIAA rule and not a NHFS rule. Point of emphasis: Want to emphasize poor behavior after leaving the

floor, running under opponent s basket and huddling at center court. A team cannot use full court if a team leaves the floor during warm up. Hand checking and palming needs to be called. Closely guarded distance references: 6 feet center circle, 2 lane spaces, and free line to top of key. Principles of verticality. Hands do not have to be 90 degrees. They can be a bit forward. Beware of the player jumping back into the defender on the baseline. Player control foul. 6. Woody had all the transfers and apprentices stand

7. Julie Vanni Shoes Average player runs 5 miles in a game. An official 3 miles. Might want to have new shoes after 300 miles approximately 60 games. Buy shoes according to your foot style. Buying shoes. Do they stand up straight on a flat service? Do they bend at the toe? Does it twist? If you pronate, you want less twist. Heel compartment should not squish together. Make sure you are warming up & stretching. Post game: take care of injuries with ice. Contact assignor if you are injured. 8. Assignors- Leslie SOWB school Last year we had a half dozen officials go down with injuries in the first weeks. Games are going on now. Some young officials may be working with some very experienced refs. In Arbiter, block out all your dates and then go back in and put the dates you want to work.
