Using Hand Tools

Welcome to the Module “Using Hand Tools”. This module contains training materials and activities

This module contains

training materials and activities for you to complete. The unit of competency “Use Hand Tools” contains
the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a Computer Hardware Servicing required to obtain the
National Certificate (NC) level II.

You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete each of the learning
outcomes of the module. In each learning outcome there are Information Sheets, Job Sheets, Assignment
Sheets, And Activity Sheets. Follow these activities on your own and answer the Self-Check at the end
of each learning activity.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your facilitator for assistance.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may already have some basic knowledge and skills covered in this module because you
have been working for some time; or already completed training in this area.

If you can demonstrate to your trainer in a particular skill, talk to him/her about having them
formally recognized so you don’t have to do the same training again. If you have a qualification or
Certificate of Competency from previous trainings, show it to him/her. If the skills you acquired are
consistent with and relevant to this module, they become part of the evidence you can present for RPL.
If you are not sure about your competence skills, discuss this with your trainer. After completing this
module ask your trainer to assess your competence. Result of your assessment will be recorded in your
competency profile.
All the learning activities are designed for you to complete at your own pace. Inside this module
you will find the activities for you to complete and followed by relevant information sheets for each
learning outcome. Each learning outcome may have more than one learning activity. This module is
prepared to help you achieve the required competency, in receiving and relaying information. This will
be the source of information that will enable you to acquire the knowledge and skills in “using hand
tools” independently at your own pace or with minimum supervision or help from your trainer.

In Computer Systems Servicing NC II, a variety of hand tools are used to repair, maintain, and service
computer systems and related hardware. Here’s a list of some common hand tools you might encounter in
this field:
1. Screwdrivers
Flat-head and Phillips screwdrivers: Used for opening computer cases and disassembling components.

2. Pliers
Needle nose pliers: For gripping small parts or wires, especially in tight spaces.
Cutting pliers: Used for cutting wires or cables.

3. Tweezers
Used for picking up small components like screws, jumpers, or memory modules.

4. Spudger
A plastic tool used to open cases or disconnect delicate cables without damaging the components.

5. Wrenches
Adjustable wrench: Used for tightening or loosening nuts and bolts in computer hardware.

6. Anti-static Wrist Strap

A safety tool that prevents electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging sensitive computer components.

7. Cable Strippers
Used for removing insulation from cables to expose wires for connections.

8. Soldering Iron
Used for soldering wires or fixing broken connections on motherboards or other components.

9. Multimeter
Although not technically a hand tool, a multimeter is essential for measuring electrical voltage, current, and
resistance in computer components to troubleshoot and test circuits.

10. Hex Wrenches (Allen Keys)

Used for screws that have hexagonal heads, often found in mounting hardware and some components.

11. Cleaning Brushes

Used for dusting off or cleaning components like fans, heat sinks, and motherboards.

12. Clamps and Holders
