E-Portfolio Proposal. (Draft Copy) By David Berljawsky Submitted to Prof.

Frac Feng, ETEC 590 Jam 31st, 2012

Statement of Purpose, Introduction: One thing that I have learned through my studies in the MET program is to expect the unexpected. This means, that often, things that go according to plan do not actually go according to plan. In real non-academic life, this is true as well. Often the best laid plans dont turn out that way. The reason that I am bringing this up is because of my eportfolio. Over the past few weeks I have been deciding on what metaphor I would use to present my learning growth and academic progression. Recently, I moved. This was not a typical move. I have moved 3 times in the previous 6 years, from the east coast to the west coast, I lived in rural and urban environments. I had completed a teaching degree and was working (at a new school constantly) nearly full time. I was nearly completing my MA. However, in the past 10 months, I have decided to leave the teaching profession for a new challenge, and have moved yet again to Ottawa to pursue my new goal. This is a challenging time, and if one does not embrace change than I believe that one can be overwhelmed and bogged down by change. I decided to use this belief that I have in conjunction with my metaphor. My metaphor coincides with both the academic life I have been pursuing and also the professional and personal life that I have been living. It is meant to show my growth academically and personally over the past few years. I have chosen moving, as my metaphor. This is personal to me. My reasoning is such: There is constant change, the weather is unpredictable at times, you are constantly thrown in to multiple cultures and new situations and need to be prepared for issues as they arise, be it a flat tire, a bad lunch or finding a gas station. This is similar to my

experience teaching in that you need to be prepared for the unprepared. I am still unsure if I want to relate this to a long drive, train ride, flight, or a combination. Please keep in mind that I do not live in British Columbia and am not actively teaching, thus do not need to meet the TQS requirements, although I will try to.

Questions or Thoughts relating to the Statement of Purpose: The key thoughts I had were how can this be coincided with my non-academic life? How can I make this more real to me? Initially I was thinking of using metaphors that were closely related to hobbies, or beliefs that are important to me, but they kept changing. The objective of this metaphor is to allow me to have multiple pages of problems related to movement and moving and relating them to important issues in education. I will solve these issues and problems through my MET coursework examples, and in reflections of my academic growth.

References and Resources The resources that I will be using are selections of papers and projects from my MET course. I have videos and powerpoints that I have created, as well as some key papers and reflections from throughout the program. These artifacts will chart my academic growth and understanding of certain topics; such as underprivileged literacy and computer education and media education initiatives and reflections. The goal of this is

to include information that shows my questioning ability along with my academic development. The key three main artifacts that I have chosen are as follows:

ETEC 521 Creating a Culturally Relevant Internet Communications Technology Curriculum. This project was completed my first semester and is an excellent example of my initial status in the MET program and my initial line of questioning.

ETEC 565 Moodle Site: This is an example of my technical ability to use Moodle. It will be an excellent artifacts to use for potential employers

ETEC Venture Analysis of the XO Laptop: This is a recent paper showing that I have the ability to critique products and provide a venture analysis.

I will also include links to Google pages sites that I have contributed to, and some YouTube videos that I have created to show my multimedia ability, I am still unsure of which artifacts of this nature to chose. The decision will likely be made as a construct my ePortfolio and reflections. I will be updating this section over the next two weeks as I construct my portfolio.

Resources: I have chosen a selection of articles that I believe are very integral to my growth in this program. Some are simple articles, some are longer, one key component that they all share is that they are inquisitive. Many of them make me question the status quo, this is something that I take very seriously.

Many of the quotes and references that will be used are meant to enhance the overall page and present the reader with questions that require them to examine their own notions of technology education. This is not an exhaustive list, as I finalize my project I am sure that more will be added.

Expected Outcomes of the Project: My expected outcome and purpose in creating this eportfolio is to show that my technical ability is of high MET standards. I am still unsure about what program I will use to create to container for the project. I was initially thinking of using Google sites, however I am starting to question this decision. I do not believe that there is anything

wrong with Google sites. I am a big believer in free internet and in openness. Google sites, is accessible and useable by those without a strong computer background. This is important for me. However, I would like to challenge myself and may use Dreamweaver instead. This is important considering I will likely be using this portfolio as an electronic resume for potential employers.

Audience: The audience that I am aiming for is potential employers. Since I am in the progression of a career change, possibly into the non-profit or public-service sector I will be using this portfolio to show off my technical ability and my ability to solve problems logically. It is to showcase certain multimedia, and written projects that I believe show my growth and ability to reason and grasp certain issues.

Time Plan for Completion an Assessment Rubric: I am still unsure how many pages this site will be over, it will hopefully sort itself out in short order. I am planning to get my rubric and artifacts collection completed and finalized in the next two weeks .I am planning to have the rubric completed by the end of week 7. This will allow me multiple weeks to reassess and change what is needed. Each page will have minimum one project relating to the metaphor along with one new reflection looking back at the project, when it was created and examining my growth from creating this work.

Potential Time Plan: Week 5-7 Finalize proposal Weeks 8 9: Peer reviews and final preparation. Create shell for ePortfolio in Dreamweaver. Figure out hosting logistics. Weeks 10-12: Finish ePortfolio. Create pages and input into Dreamweaver portfolio shell.
