Sikkim, state in India,is located in the northeastern part of the country, in the

eastern Himalayas. It is one of the smallest states in India. Sikkim is bordered by


the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north and northeast, by Bhutan to the
southeast, by the Indian state of West Bengal to the south, and by Nepal to the west. The
capital is Gangtok, in the southeastern part of the state

Admission to union -16 May 1975

CUISINE
Noodle-based dishes such as thukpa, chow mein, thenthuk, fakthu, gyathuk
and wonton are common in Sikkim.
Momos – steamed dumplings filled with vegetables, chicken, mutton, beef or pork and
served with soup – are a popular snack
LANGUAGES
The official languages of the state are English, Nepali, Sikkimese (Bhutia) and Lepcha.

The major languages spoken Nepali (62.61%), Sikkimese (Bhutia) (7.73%), Hindi
(6.67%), Lepcha (6.61%), Limbu (6.34%), Sherpa (2.57%), Tamang (1.87%) and Rai
(1.64%)

TRADITIONAL CLOTHS

a. Kho or Bakhu
 This is one single dress that is worn by both men and women on multiple occasions.

b. Thokro Dum
Thokro Dum is another interesting dress that is worn by the locals of Sikkim and
specifically the Lepcha Community

c. Dumvum

This is a traditional dress that’s worn by the women of Lepcha and it involves a garment
that’s worn like a saree.

d. Pharia

Women wear it usually during their festivals.

e. Shuruval
Shuruval is attire that’s worn by Nepalese Men and is a fashion they have invented for
their culture.
THANGKA PAINTING:

The most popular Buddhist art is the thangka painting. In Sikkim, you may see thangka
painting and the various creative traditions that go with it all over the place. These cover
a wide range of interfaces.
