We are a leading quarrying company in Abuja, focused on producing high-quality aggregates
for construction and infrastructure projects. Our operations span drilling, blasting, crushing,
screening, and material stockpiling. We seek a highly skilled, technically sound Quarry
Manager to lead and optimize our quarry operations.
Job Overview:
The Quarry Manager will oversee all technical and operational aspects of quarry production,
including drilling, blasting, crushing, and screening. The role involves optimizing plant
throughput, managing equipment maintenance, ensuring regulatory compliance, and leading
the workforce. The ideal candidate should demonstrate technical expertise in plant
operations, strong leadership, and a sharp focus on cost control and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Production & Operations Management:
• Plan, coordinate, and manage daily quarry operations, including drilling, blasting, crushing,
screening, and material stockpiling.
• Monitor plant throughput and adjust crusher settings (CSS and OSS) for optimal production
efficiency and particle size distribution.
• Oversee the complete blasting cycle, including blast design, charge calculations, stemming,
and post-blast assessments.
• Implement process control strategies to maximize production while minimizing downtime
and wear.
• Ensure material flow from primary to secondary crushers and screens is consistent and
balanced.
• Continuously evaluate plant performance using KPIs such as tonnage per hour (tph), power
consumption per ton, and equipment availability.
2. Technical Plant & Equipment Management:
• Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for all quarry
equipment, including crushers, screens, excavators, loaders, power generators, drilling
wagons and haul trucks.
• Monitor critical plant components, including conveyor belts, screen meshes, and crusher
liners, to prevent unplanned failures.
• Analyze vibration, oil condition, and temperature data to identify potential equipment issues
early.
• Ensure proper choke feeding of crushers to optimize reduction ratio and minimize fines
generation.
• Track key performance parameters such as motor load, power draw, and material flow to
identify inefficiencies.
• Work closely with the maintenance team to manage spare parts inventory and ensure timely
repairs.
3. Blasting & Drilling Supervision:
• Collaborate with blasting contractors to design blast patterns that achieve optimal
fragmentation and reduce oversize.
• Ensure proper drilling patterns (burden, spacing, and hole depth) based on rock type and
bench height.
• Conduct post-blast assessments using fragmentation analysis software to refine future blast
designs.
• Monitor ground vibrations and air overpressure to ensure compliance with safety standards.
• Ensure explosives are stored, handled, and used according to Nigerian mining regulations.
4. Safety, Health, and Environmental Compliance:
• Enforce strict adherence to Nigerian mining regulations and international best practices for
quarry safety.
• Conduct regular toolbox talks, safety inspections, and risk assessments.
• Ensure all staff and contractors wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Implement dust suppression measures, including water sprays at crushers and haul roads.
• Ensure safe handling and disposal of waste materials.
5. Cost Control & Financial Management:
• Prepare and manage the quarry's operational budget, ensuring cost efficiency across all
activities.
• Monitor diesel consumption per ton of production and identify areas for improvement.
• Track production costs, including equipment hire, spare parts, and consumables.
• Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly production and cost reports for senior management.
• Implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising production efficiency.
6. Quality Control & Process Optimization:
• Ensure aggregates produced meet customer specifications and Nigerian standards.
• Monitor feed size, crusher gap settings, and screen apertures to maintain consistent product
gradation.
• Conduct regular material sampling and testing to identify production inefficiencies.
• Minimize material reprocessing and fines generation through process control.
• Optimize stockpile management to prevent material segregation.
7. Leadership & Staff Management:
• Lead, train, and supervise quarry staff, including machine operators, crusher operators, and
maintenance teams.
• Assign daily tasks, conduct performance evaluations, and address staff grievances.
• Promote a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
• Ensure proper shift planning to maximize production while reducing overtime costs.
Key Qualifications & Technical Skills:
• Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related
field.
• Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience in quarry or mining operations, with at least 3
years in a managerial role.
• Strong technical expertise in plant operations, including crushers (jaw, cone, and impact),
vibrating screens, and conveyor systems.
• Proficiency in blast design, fragmentation analysis, and post-blast evaluation.
• Experience with quarry management software and plant monitoring systems (SCADA).
• Solid understanding of Nigerian mining and environmental regulations.
• Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
• Production Output: Tons per hour (tph) and daily production targets.
• Crusher Efficiency: Power consumption per ton and throughput.
• Equipment Uptime: Percentage of operational hours vs. total available hours.
• Diesel Efficiency: Liters consumed per ton of material produced.
• Safety Record: Incident-free days and near-miss reporting.
• Material Quality: Gradation analysis and product compliance.
• Cost Control: Actual production costs vs. budgeted costs.
