SAFETY SUMMARY

DO NOT SERVICE OR ADJUST ALONE

Personnel shall not, under any circumstances, perform potentially dangerous maintenance
tasks, or procedures, except in the presence of a person who is capable of rendering aid.

KEEP AWAY FROM LIVE CIRCUITS

Operating personnel must at all times observe all safety regulations. Do not replace
components or make adjustments inside equipment with high voltage supply turned ON.
Under certain conditions, due to charges retained by capacitors, dangerous potentials may
exist when the power control is in the OFF position. To avoid personal injury, always remove
electrical power and discharge and ground a circuit before commencing work on that circuit.

RESUSCITATION

Personnel working with or near high voltages should be familiar with the modern methods of
resuscitation.

FINGER RINGS/JEWELRY

Finger rings have caused serious injury. Remove rings, watches and other metallic objects
which may cause shock or burn hazards. Remove finger rings during all maintenance
activities.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW

Three major components:

- Externally mounted Hoist
Assembly
- Control Box
- Hand held Control Pendant
Assembly

The Goodrich Corporation externally mounted Hoist assembly consists of a 28 voe brushless
electric motor assembly, with an internal electronic controller (motor), driving a level wind
and storage drum assembly (drum) through a gear train.

An automatic load brake assembly locks the drum in any position when power to the electric
motor is interrupted. The brake holds the load in the selected position when hoist operation
is interrupted.

These features enhance operational safety and unit reliability, and extend the service life of
the hoist assembly.

The hoist is normally operated by a crew-person through a variable speed control in a hand-
held control pendant assembly or control box. A second set of controls for the hoist is
located on the helicopter cyclic stick. These controls are operated by the pilot and have
priority over the crew-person controls.

SYSTEM ELECTRICAL DESCRIPTION
The Aeronautical Accessories External Hoist Kit with Goodrich Hoist is a 28 VDC, 125
ampere system.
Each hoist is rated at 600 lbs lifting capability. It is controlled by a cockpit mounted control
unit which operates on 28 VDC, 5 amperes. Incorporated into the system is an electrical
cable cutting devise which operates off the 28 VDC system and requires 5 amperes for
cutter activation. This hoist system is compatible with 28 volt helicopter electrical systems.
The only limiting factor is the current-producing capabilities of the helicopter generating
system.

MAIN DRIVE MOTOR OVERVIEW

The Goodrich main drive motor is a brushless DC motor, capable of continuous duty and is
rated at 28 VDC.
During hoisting operation, the main drive motor and integral electronic controller are cooled
by an integral fan and a motor fan assembly. The integral fan is mounted on the motor rotor
assembly and provides cooling when the motor is in use. The motor is primarily cooled by
the motor fan assembly. An auxiliary motor fan is supplied to cool the motor and integral
electronic controller when power is applied to the hoist.
• The motor design incorporates a thermal warning and protection system to provide
maximum output and/or torque to the point of failure without being a fire hazard.
• The Over temperature indicator on the Control Pendant illuminates when it receives a
signal from the control electronics when the thermal switch in the main drive motor is
open indicating that an over-temperature condition exists.

• The cable speed is reduced during the over temperature condition. When the
temperature falls below the preset limits, the signal to the over temperature indicator is
cancelled and the indicator lamp is extinguished and full cable speed is resumed.
• This condition warns the operator of an over-temperature condition but will not
automatically stop hoist operation. The thermal switches will automatically reset when
the temperature is lowered.

A. Cable Reel-out

WARNING:
during in-flight operation, a static electrical charge develops in the helicopter. To avoid injury
to personnel, ensure the static electrical charge is discharged to ground before ground
personnel are allowed to touch the external mounted hoist cable assembly.

CAUTION:
do not extend the external mounted hoist cable beyond the length that enables the cable hook
assembly to contact the ground unless provision is made to prevent damage to, and
entanglement of, the cable.

(1) Slowly rotate the control pendant assembly thumbwheel in the reel-out direction. Make
sure the cable reel-out velocity increases as the thumbwheel rotation is increased.
(2) Continue reeling out the external mounted hoist cable to just beyond 10.0 feet (3 m) of
extension. Make sure that the cable reel-out speed increases automatically.
(3) For the 42325-16-2, 42325-16-3, 42325-16-4, 42325-16-5, 42325-16-6, and 42325-
16-7 hoist, make sure the cable extension indicator on control pendant assembly
indicates approximately 10.0 feet (3 m) and that CAUTION /SLOW indicator
extinguishes.
(4) Release control pendant assembly thumbwheel, cable control station thumbwheel or
cable control box thumbwheel. Make sure the thumbwheel returns to the center neutral
position automatically and that external mounted hoist assembly operation ceases.

B. Cable Reel-in

(1) Slowly rotate the control pendant assembly thumbwheel in the reel-in direction. Make
sure the cable reel-in velocity increases as the thumbwheel rotation is increased.
(2) Continue reeling in the external mounted hoist cable to just under 10 feet (3 m) of
extension. Make sure that the cable reel-in speed decreases automatically.
(3) For the 42325-16-2, 42325-16-3, 42325-16-4, 42325-16-5, 42325-16-6, and 42325-
16-7 hoist, make sure the cable extension indicator on control pendant assembly
indicates approximately 10.0 feet (3 m) and that CAUTION/SLOW indicator
illuminates.
(4) Maintain the external mounted hoist cable reel-in selection. Make sure that with 21 to
26 inches (53 to 66 cm) of cable extended from the external mounted hoist, the reel-
in speed decreases automatically.
NOTE: FULL UP limit switches (S9, S10) will stop the external mounted hoist assembly
automatically when the cable hook assembly is housed and a reset tension is applied to the
external mounted hoist cable.
(5) Maintain the external mounted hoist cable reel-in selection. Make sure external
mounted hoist assembly operation ceases automatically and the final reel-in
movement applies a tension to the external mounted hoist cable.
(6) Release the thumbwheel and make sure thumbwheel returns to the center neutral
position automatically.

Using a gloved hand, apply a load

of about 20 lbs (9.1 kg) or greater
when reeling in the cable. This
procedure is recommended to be
accomplished after cable
inspection.
Tension can be applied through the
use of the recommended tools
(Figure 702) or a gloved hand
maintaining a positive pull on the
cable during reel in, which
generates the needed 20 lb load.
When using a gloved hand, there is
no need to measure the applied
load.
NOTE: This procedure is
recommended in order to
minimize cable wear and to
optimize cable behaviour
