Chapter 1: Learning as a way of life

The pursuit for knowledge is never-ending – this has been proven by history
itself. For instance, scientists and medical researchers have introduced to the
world a medical breakthrough that brings hope in curing even the fatal illnesses
that have threatened mankind – the stem cell therapy. Since its introduction, stem
cell therapy has been the center of controversies, and is widely debated by
scholars. There is a great divide existing between people who are in favor of the
therapy and people who strongly object to its use and research. But amidst this
diversity in beliefs, research about the said therapy is ongoing. Scientists are
conducting tests, and comprehensive studies to acquire more knowledge about
the stem cell therapy. And this is done to pursue knowledge that they have not
yet known before.
Now, let us leave behind these medical discussions, that scientific world, and
dwell in our ‘own personal world,’ in our own comforts. People all over the
world – people from different races, with various beliefs – are in their own
quests for knowledge. Students are searching in the libraries for some books and
academic journals that might provide the answers for their queries about, for
example, the history of their country. A rising businessman attends seminars that
discuss effective ways on how to become successful in the competitive world of
business, in the hopes that he will someday succeed in the field he has chosen. A
chorister listens to different choral groups to help her increase her level of
musicality. Even that innocent five-year-old child asks his mom why a ball rolls
on the floor.
See? One thing similar among all these people is their curiosity – curiosity that
leads to their desire to search for knowledge, to search for answers to all of life’s
questions, to learn new things that they have never known before. This is
because learning provides us a lot of possibilities to grow into better persons.
And as we dwell on the fact that our development could be attributed to the
knowledge that we acquired, and continue to acquire, we arrive to the conclusion
that learning could actually be an inseparable part of life – that learning itself is a
way of life.
Considered as a way of life, why don't we begin to search for possible ways to
improve our learning?
Chapter 2: What is learning capacity?

Imagine an airless balloon in front of you. We see nothing more than that tiny
elastic itself. Now, visualize in your mind that the balloon is being inflated by
air. The once airless balloon has expanded dramatically, and is a lot different
from what it was before. Perhaps what is greatly noticeable is that the more air
occupies the balloon’s interiors, the higher the balloon floats afterwards. This is
somehow similar to the human brain and its relation to the over-all performance
and function of an individual. The more knowledge an individual acquires from
learning, the more effective he becomes in the activities he engages in.
Scientifically speaking, this phenomenon is referred to as learning capacity.
According to Knowledge Works, a handbook that instructs people on how to
apply knowledge effectively in their lives, an individual has an innate capability
to distinguish and utilize the knowledge he had acquired through the process of
learning. It also attests that when one’s learning capacity is increased, his way of
learning also develops further. What is more interesting about it is that human’s
learning capacity is interminable, and this could be attributed to our brain’s
neuroplasticity – the brain’s own way of reorganizing itself. Structural plasticity,
a type of neuroplasticity, is that phenomenon that occurs when the brain itself
changes its structure as the learning process takes place; just like that balloon
changing its physical appearance as it is being filled by the air. Thus, our brain
never stops functioning as we continue to learn more things, but keeps on
adapting instead as new information and knowledge are being stored into it.
But how can an individual increase his learning capacity?
Chapter 3: Learning styles to increase one’s learning
capacity

There are countless ways people do to acquire knowledge, thus increasing their
learning capacity. Among them are reading, the widely used of all, and doing
hands-on activities that require an individual to integrate his total being in the
actual learning process, therefore experiencing it firsthand. Learning Rx has
categorized the different ways of learning techniques into auditory, visual, and
kinesthetic.
An individual is considered an auditory learner if he acquires knowledge
effectively through aural activities. For example, a lot of junior high school
students excel in their exams after listening to their teachers’ discussions. Some
study methods include reciting your notes out loud (just like how some people
memorize poems just by reading the verses out loud), and recording your
professor’s discussion, or your own voice discussing what you have learned.
On the other hand, when an individual acquires knowledge best from what he
has observed and perceived, then he is considered a visual learner. Subjectively
speaking, this style of learning is more applicable to young children.
Kindergartens, even some month-old babies, are usually provided some visual
aids that show what colors are, the letters of the alphabet, and the basics that
they could learn at a very young age. Some people claim that they could
remember things better after they have seen or have even watched them.
In contrast to visual learning, here is the third learning style that some people
find more effective – kinesthetic learning. This style of learning involves hands-
on experience. This means that an individual acquires knowledge effectively
after he himself has participated in the actual learning process. For example, an
aspiring chorister would not become a good one without singing every note that
the song requires. Aside from previously mentioned example, jotting down notes
while the professor discusses some theorems in mathematics or some technical
terms that need to be memorized is also inclusive of kinesthetic learning.
Given the three main styles of learning, it must be remembered that each person
has different ways of acquiring knowledge, and the method of learning differs in
how fast an individual learns through a particular learning style. However, it
must also be noted that no one is restricted from acquiring knowledge only
through the learning styles mentioned before. NLP is now one of the techniques
that help various people accelerate their learning capacity.
Chapter 4: History of NLP

In the 1970s, two men from entirely different origins cofounded NLP, or the
Neuro-Linguistic Programming technique.
Richard Bandler, a man of mathematics and gestalt therapy, shared his
knowledge and collaborated with John Grinder, a professor of linguistics. The
two were said to have worked on a thesis project that aspired to come up with an
archetype of the human behavior. The two conducted studies and researches in
search for an answer to their query about why there are some people who
actually excel in the fields they engaged in, while others strive harder and were
put in more difficult situations before they could have attained whatever they
aimed for. Emerging from two different fields of knowledge, it could be inferred
that the two great minds wanted to come up with a new way of teaching that will
surely encompass the entire being of an individual.
In the chapters to follow, we will discuss what NLP is and how to make use of it
effectively to help you accelerate your learning capacity and be the totally
developed person that you have always dreamt of.
Chapter 5: NLP and how it works

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a field of study that pertains to the

interrelationship of the essential facets of an individual’s being that are necessary
in yielding the human experience. These are neurology, language, and
programming; where the name of Bandler and Grinder’s model was derived
from.
The neurological system deals with how our brain processes the information it
has gathered. Language includes, but is not only restricted to the process of
communication, how we interact with other people, and how we send and gain
information as well. Programming, on the other hand, refers to the patterns of
thinking, as well as the behavior of an individual towards learning, and how he
applies these in his everyday life. Given these breakdown for an in-depth
analysis of what NLP actually is, we could conclude that the founders of this
school of thought aimed to help an individual develop his total personality, as
not only his intellect, but his entire being as well are in the works of increasing
his learning capacity.
Furthermore, NLP is not only restricted to the development and enhancement of
an individual’s intellectual capacity, but is also a venue for self-discovery –
which might refer to how one assesses his capabilities, and strives to how he
might overcome his weaknesses and shortcomings as he discovers his own
liabilities. It is also involved in the discovery of the values that a man should
possess – a hunger for spiritual development, emotional-stability, and a deep
sense of humanity, to name some. What is very admiring about such school of
thought is that it involves the development of being human itself, and not only
the intellectual part is being enhanced. Dr. Paul Tosey and Dr. Jane Mathison,
from the School of Management University of Surrey, stated in their study that
NLP, an innovative way of learning, has been known for its contribution to
communication and personality development. Because of its nature as a widely-
encompassing method of learning, NLP has been described as both “an art of
communication excellence” and the “study of the structure of subjective
experience.” Moreover, Tosey and Mathison also asserted that NLP was
developed to construct ways to understand how people take part in the
processing of information and how they carry out their newly-acquired
knowledge for them to accomplish their goals in life.
In its most basic definition, NLP refers to how we utilize the intellectual aspect
of our being in order to attain the goals we have set in our lives.
Now that we have an idea of what NLP is, let us engage ourselves in an in-depth
analysis of how NLP works in an individual.
In an article posted on www.holistics-online.com, it was stated that NLP utilizes
self-image and proper attitude so that change will take effect in a specific aspect
of our lives. By that, it means that NLP provides you a situational analysis where
you can engage in. For example, once an individual acknowledges and accepts
his liabilities and shortcomings, it is possible for him to overcome those if he has
the will to change these negativities in his life. But of course, no undertaking
will be hailed successful without the cooperation of the willpower and the efforts
of an individual to change what he had wanted to alter or develop in his
personality. For instance, there are some existing websites that provide
guidelines and tips for developing one’s personality. One of them is
freshinsightcoaching.com, wherein web users are provided some situations and
the corresponding NLP techniques that they could practice and make use of. In
example, there is a section that guides people to achieve weight loss. The site
does not only provide useful tips for achieving weight loss, but it also engages
its readers into analyzing why they could not easily lose weight. The example
aforementioned shows basically how NLP works: it requires first situational
analysis so that the individual can engage in activities that could improve the
way he perceives the world, and the way he acts in accordance to what he had
perceived.
Now that we have a basic idea of how Neuro-Linguistic Programming works, let
us explore its different techniques, analyze its relationship with the human’s
learning capacity, and apply its techniques to increase our learning and thrive to
reach our potential.
Chapter 6: NLP techniques and their usage

In his e-book entitled “NLP Secrets: Upgrade Your Mind with Neuro-Linguistic
Programming,” Pete Casale reveals some of the best and well-known NLP
techniques that are being used by people all over the world. These include (1)
anchoring, (2) pattern interruption, (3) swish, (4) loop break, (5) framing, (6) the
Meta model, (7) presuppositions, and (8) mirroring. The techniques mentioned
deal primarily with the development of an individual’s camaraderie and good
socialization with others; and for the intrapersonal level, the discovery of an
individual’s way to handle his emotions and have a better control of his behavior
and actions. With these goals incorporated by the NLP techniques, it could be
inferred that NLP truly is not restricted to the intellectual development, for it also
opens the door towards having a desirable social life – for it is through getting
along with other people do we learn to actually be ourselves, and also gain
knowledge from the people we socialize with. One of the things that we could
learn from applying NLP techniques to our lives is building confidence.
Confidence could be considered as one of the essential traits that each individual
should possess. Without a feeling of confidence, of a great trust or belief in his
capabilities, an individual’s stairway to success may seem blurry. This is because
an individual’s belief in himself dictates how far he could go to attain the goal he
has dreamt of. Castale provided ways on how to achieve confidence with the aid
of the NLP techniques. First, he guides his readers to envision what and how a
truly confident person looks like and acts. Then, he asks the readers to recall an
event in their lives when they are full of confidence and belief in themselves,
and let that memory linger for a while. Castale then asks his readers to picture
themselves possessing so much confidence in every work or activity they engage
in or want to pursue at some future time. Analyzing just the steps that Castale
provided his reader for applying NLP techniques, we come into the realization
that a great deal of mind power is involved as an individual search for ways to
improve both his personality and intellect.
Aside from building confidence, NLP plays a vital role in the development of the
communication process, as mentioned earlier. Some of the communicating skills
that could be developed and improved are building rapport, learning how to
communicate effectively through the use of appropriate and proper language,
and even respond to criticisms. Building rapport is a very crucial one to the
development of an individual because, as Castale believes, rapport is the
connection that links us together.
Modern Psychology Magazine has once conferred NLP as a school of thought
that could be the most influential vehicle for the betterment of the entire human
race. This could be attributed to the fact that a lot of aspect in an individual’s life
could be developed if NLP is then learned and applied. NLP has been used as a
training and even therapy for certain concerns. These issues are classified into
three main categories: problem resolution, creative solutions, and goal
achievement. What NLP does in the mentioned categories is basically helping
people assess themselves to find out their liabilities, to provide solutions to
overcome those hindrances so that the participating people will become better
individuals capable of attaining their goals.
With the given benefits of NLP to the other aspects of personality development,
let us discuss further its relationship to the process of intellectual learning, and
how it might aid in accelerating the learning capacity of an individual.
According to www.inspiritive.com.au, NLP is a venue for accelerating the
learning capacity of an individual. Susprisingly, accelerated learning itself is also
a result of the NLP methodology, such as multi-sensory touching, multiple
descriptions, and pattern detections. In some universities, NLP has been widely
practiced and has actually become a part of their curriculum because it supports
the learners to excel in the type of learning style they prefer – the visual learning,
auditory learning, and kinesthetic learning, to reiterate.
In contrast to the traditional learning model which include oral examination,
memorization of facts, and instructions that were solely based on the text books
used by the school, the NLP learning strategies suggest better and more effective
ways of learning so that the students would not only regurgitate knowledge
passed on from generation to another generation, but for them to comprehend
every detail about that fact they were taught. Moreover, learning strategies also
include hands-on experiences so that learning could be more effective. Other
learning strategies that the innovative NLP has introduced are visualization and
metaphors, reframing and anchoring.
As its name suggests, visualization involves a lot of activities that include a wide
usage of the perceiving sense. For example, in a badminton class, students would
learn the difference between a smash and a drop if they have actually seen how
to enact the different techniques of the sport. On the other hand, using metaphors
pave the way for the students to think beyond what is actually taught to them.
One instance of the use of metaphors as teaching strategy is a literature class that
discusses a poem about a roach that dwells in filthy garbage. A new idea from a
student suggests that roaches could be a symbolism for greedy politicians, and
then the entire class engages in the discussion and tried to figure out how the
symbolism may be possible. Through the use of metaphors, an individual is not
restricted to an idea provided, but he is given the freedom to explore and acquire
an entirely different thinking.
Meanwhile, reframing deals with altering one’s outlook over an idea or situation.
For example, if he is faced in a negative situation, he reframes it and tries to
create a positive way to get rid of the negativities. In the context of learning, it
could be present in circumstances wherein when one student finds his
examination difficult, he then changes this assumption and thinks that he could
pass the exam with flying colors. This method is an effective one for a lot of
people because the whole body responds to h0w our brain reacts in a certain
situation.
Lastly, anchoring is that learning strategy wherein a new idea is being instructed
by the educator at the moment his learners are in their most responsive state. In
this way, a new idea or knowledge takes root in the mind, and students are most
likely to recall what they have learned.

Chapter 7: Effectiveness of NLP in learning

Now that we have been acquainted with what NLP is, how it works, and its
relation to the improvement of the learning capacity, it cannot be denied that
there is a little feeling of doubt as to whether NLP actually works. But fret no
more, for stated in the passages to follow are in-depth analyses and studies
conducted before that may either prove or refute the effectivity of the Neuro-
Linguistic Programming.
Surprisingly, NLP has been the center of controversies and debate among the
scientific and psychological communities. According to a review on the research
conducted by Tosey and Mathison, there were no sufficient studies conducted
about NLP. Not much articles and academic paper circulate about the effectivity
and support from scientific evidences. Moreover, the theoretical basis of NLP
itself has been questioned by scholarly groups. Since there is absence of a
thorough and comprehensive study on NLP, there was also just a little
exploration to answer the questions imposed on the development of NLP.
In contrary to the arguments imposed by groups who are not in favor of the
model, there was a recorded survey about NLP. During the mid-1997, 192
graduates of all levels of NLP certification training participated in the survey.
According to results, there is an incredibly high level of satisfaction, and almost
no report of dissatisfaction with the type of NLP training that the graduates had
received.
Despite the differences in the statements and evidences whether the Neuro-
Linguistic Programming is proven effective, one must bear in mind that results
as to whether NLP is truly efficient may vary. NLP, as mentioned before, is a
learning strategy that does not only require the use of the intellect, but the whole
being of the learner himself. Therefore, the collective effort of the learner might
be a crucial factor to determine whether or not he succeeds in his field using the
NLP techniques.

Chapter 8: Interrelation between learning capacity
and NLP techniques

Man’s quest for knowledge is inevitable – this is similar to man’s pursuit for
improving the learning he had acquired. And as mentioned before, this could be
attributed to the fact that learning is a way of life.
However, learning has been mistaken often as only limited to a process that deals
with a lot of thinking, and only the intellectual aspect of an individual is being
developed and further enhanced. But the truth is that learning encompasses all
the other aspects of life. Upon learning, we do not only acquire knowledge, but
we also discover within ourselves our capabilities. We tend to go beyond the
realm of our comforts, to see for ourselves how far we can still go. For it is
through learning where we not only acquire knowledge, but also engage
ourselves in some sort of exploration and discovery of oneself, and the total
development of personality.
Being introduced as an innovative way of teaching, the Neuro-Linguistic
Programming techniques can be considered as one of the most appropriate and
effective ways to acquire learning in a more comprehensive and advanced level.
NLP involves not only the development of the behavioral aspect of an
individual’s being, but also engages him to participate in logical and intellectual
reasoning. As a result, not only the acquisition of knowledge is attained, but also
a full comprehension of what has just been learned.
To reiterate, in order for an individual to succeed in his life’s goals, he must not
only engross himself in learning, but he must also have a healthy balance of
intellectual capability, emotional stability, and an optimistic personality – for
these are the very crucial factors needed to further improve and accelerate
learning capacity, and thrive to reach one’s potential. And these could be attained
through the aid of a new school of thought: the Neuro-Linguistic Programming
techniques.
