OBJECTIVE

Accidents are not only unpleasant but can have a serious effect of the hotel. Reduce accidents through the adoption of simple, preventive measures and safety rules. To teach trainees what to do in cases of emergency.

To help staff understand that the hotel kitchen is potentially the most hazardous area in the hotel and requires special attention.

HAZARDS

Report at once anything you see which is likely to cause an accident. Observe all warning and danger signs, whether they are posted up, on drawings or specifications or marked on machines and equipment.

Be Cautious At All Times!

Walk dont run. Short cuts are dangerous, go the safe way. Watch out for spilt liquids etc. Do not go under suspended loads. Only use safe, properly constructed, accessible equipment. Know your escape route in case of fire.

HANDLING MACHINERY
Use your common sense when dealing with machinery. Never start up until you have made sure that dangerous moving parts are guarded and that you have been properly trained in its use and how to stop it.

HANDLING MACHINERY
Do not clean moving machinery unless you are officially authorized and are aware of the dangers. Beware of loose clothing, neck ties, sleeves, etc. Report any faults, either mechanical or electrical to your Supervisor.

LIFTING & HANDLING LOADS


It is not WHAT is handled that causes accidents. It is HOW it is handled. Think, and size the job up. Lift in the proper manner straight back and make your leg muscles work. If the job is too heavy, get help, or use lifting tackle. Be sure you can see over your load.

Wear protective gloves when handling items which can harm your hands. When using lifting tackle be sure it is the right type and check to see that the load is within its safe working limits.

ELECTRICITY
-

Dont tamper with electrical equipment or fittings or power tools call the electrician. Report defective equipment and be sure that other persons are not able to use it. Avoid trailing leads do not use frayed wires. Pull out plugs when not in use.

Only handle electrical equipment if your hands are dry. If in doubt about safety, switch off.

Safety In The Kitchen


Knives
-

Keep knives sharp, since dull knives slip easier than sharp ones. Keep knife handles clean and dry. Cut away from your body, and dont hack. Wipe knives by moving your cloth from the blunt edge to the sharp edge.

GLASSWARE
-

Store glasses and cups upside down, never stack them. Dont pick up several glasses in one hand by putting your fingers into the glasses. Never put glassware in a sink.

MACHINERY :

Operate machines only if youre trained, and authorized. Follow manufacturers instructions for safe operation and cleaning. Wear a hair net if you have long hair. Turn off the switch and pull out the plug before you clean or adjust equipment. .
