PVT Overview
PVT represents the behaviour of hydrocarbon reservoir fluids (i.e.,

oil, gas, water) during life of the field, as well as effect of changes in
temperature and pressure during fluid transfer from reservoir to
surface/processing facilities.
Routine PVT studies normally cover the following laboratory test:

1. Compositional analysis of the system

2. Constant-composition expansion
3. Differential liberation (vaporization) test
4. Separator tests
5. Constant-volume depletion
2

Constant-Composition Expansion
Purpose:
- Saturation pressure (bubble-point and dew-point pressure)
- Isothermal compressibility coefficients of the single-phasefluid in excess of saturation pressure
- Compressibility factors of the gas phase
- Pressure-Volume relations of these hydrocarbons ( Vhc=F(P) )
Object:
- Gas condensate
- Crude oil

Saturation pressure
Pressure at which vapor and liquid are in equilibrium. For

oils, equal to the bubble point. For condensates, the dew

point.
Bubble-point pressure: In their original condition, reservoir

oils include some natural gas in solution. The pressure at

which this natural gas begins to come out of solution and
form bubbles.
Dew-point pressure: The pressure at which liquids begin to

condense from the vapor phase in a gas stream.
