History of SMBSC
In March 1971, members of SMB Growers Association were
informed that the market for their sugar beets would close
as of that season. , that the processing facility at Chaska,
Minnesota would cease operations.

By October 1972, the Growers Association had

formed a cooperative

a sugar factory to serve the needs of the

approximate 300 growers involved.
Construction began in earnest in May of 1973,
with completion expected in time for the first
harvest in the fall of 1974.
In 1978,Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative
took over the operation of their factory, achieving the
goal set in 1971.

INTRODUCTION of
SMBSC
1. MN is the largest beet-producing region in the U.S.
2. The Cooperative has been in business since 1975.
3. Owned by approximately 525 shareholders raising
sugar
beets in 17 countries in Southwestern Minnesota.

INTRODUCTION
5. 280 benefit rated employees.
6. Additional 450 seasonal employees.
7. Employees have electrical, instrumentation,
mechanical, technical, and process skill Sets
8. Contribute $ 17 million to the local economy in
payroll.

Modeling Supply Chain Management

in the Sugar Beet Industry

A modeling framework based on two compon

The strategic model The first modeling component

looks at supply management over the entire mill area, as it
addresses mid-term strategic issues such as the relocation
of mills and translating centers, investments in industrial
and agricultural capacities and new rules governing
delivery allocation. It models the planning and operation of
a crushing season on a weekly basis, based on a simplified
representation of both beet flows and the stakeholders
involved in the process.

The logistic model, details the way beet is conveyed

from the fields to the mill on a daily basis. It aims at
assessing the impact that logistic constraints such as
harvest, loading and transport capacities, have on mill
supply management.

How Quality be maintained

during manufacturing process?
Herbicides are applied to sugar beets to control weeds
until the sugar beet canopy becomes large enough to
shade the area between the rows.
A sample of the beets is taken to determine their
purity and sucrose content.
Piles are monitored for temperature during the
storage term.
Sugar to be packaged, in route to the
packaging
equipment, passes over a magnet and
through a metal
detector, to ensure removal of any metal that
