POP CULTURE
Pop culture is the ideas, perspectives, attitudes, images

and other phenomena that are within the mainstream


of a given culture.

Heavily influenced by the mass media


Traditionally, popular culture was associated with poor

education and the lower classes, as opposed to the


"official culture" and higher education of the upper
classes.

Pop Culture simply denotes a widely accepted group of

practices or customs.

foods that people eat are all examples of popular culture

A large number of foreign tourists came to

Korea after watching Winter Love Song and


Dae-jang-geum.

Along with success in dramas, Korean singers

are gaining notice abroad.

KPOP
South Korea is emerging in the 21st century

as a major exporter of popular culture. As part


of the Korean wave, K-pop has been embraced
by the South Korean government as a tool for
soft power abroad, particularly towards youth.
The Economist has dubbed Korean pop culture
as "Asias foremost trendsetter"

K-pop artists are now gaining more

international exposure through social


media networks such as YouTube,
Facebook, and Twitter, making it easier
for them to reach a wider audience.

K-pop has been criticized for overtly relying on

American sound and being "copycats" of


Western music patterns. Some Korean artists
have even been involved in accusations of
plagiarism.New York magazine calls K-pop
songs "catchy but derivative.The genre is
often called bubblegum pop.Lyrics have been
criticized for being shallow and lifeless and for
containing meaningless or non-existing
English words.
