Configured IED Description (CID File)

Describing a device configuration, which can be used

for dowload on an IED.

This means that it describes which communication

that is possible for the device in a IEC 61850 system

Horizontal Communication

Generic Object Oriented System Events (GOOSE)

Standardized horizontal

Replaces hard-wiring between

IEDs & Controllers
GOOSE = Generic Object
Oriented Substation Event.
GOOSE is used to broadcast
events to between IEDs in a
substation.
Ethernet technology offers a
fast and reliable station bus for
transfer of data.

ABB Group
10/8/16 | Slide 17

GOOSE data exchange

The GOOSE communication link between the IEDs is

supervised by sending data cyclically

When data change is detected by an IED the event is

immediately sent to the network multiple times to
ensure reception of data

GOOSE performance

GOOSE speed requirements from IED to IED as defined by

the standard

Type 1 (fast messages)

Type 1A (tripping)

Class P2/3: <3 ms (transmission)

Class P1: <10 ms (distribution)

Type 1B (others)

Class P2/3: <20 ms

Class P1: <100 ms

Following the IEC 61850 standard means that peer-to-peer signalling is faster than
traditional hard-wiring for Type 1A ClassP2/3.

Reduced wiring and faster response times.

Arc protection using REF615 and GOOSE
3.

Both IED A (incoming feeder) and IED B

(outgoing feeder) are equipped with
three arc sensors

IED B detects an arc in the busbar

compartment via sensor 1 and sends an
appropriate GOOSE message to IED A

After receiving the GOOSE message

IED A checks the current level, and if
the set start level is exceeded, issues a
trip command to the circuit-breaker of
IED A

GOOSE communication enables fast

and station wide supervised arc
protection schemes

IED C

IEDs in incoming and outgoing feeders send

calculated power value and position
indications to AC800M Process Controller
using GOOSE
According to load scheme controller can
shed loads and thus keep the most important
loads running
Shedding is done by sending a signal to IED
in outgoing feeder to open the circuit breaker
