How I followed the codes and conventions that appear on a typical magazine front
cover.
Both in my college magazine and in the ELLE magazine large mastheads were used
so they can be seen from a distance as the masthead is what would grab the target
audiences attention after looking at the main image, from looking at both these
mastheads we can tell what genre these magazines are made for. Both magazines
feature one main image rather than having secondary images this follows the codes
and conventions because having one main image is used when you want to create a
front cover that looks more sophisticated rather than creating a hectic front cover
with secondary images. Another way it follows the codes and conventions is because
my magazine featured an issue type and so did the ELLE magazine. The purpose of
having an issue type featured on the magazine is so subscribers know how long the
magazine has been running for or what magazine theyre looking for, having an issue
number suggests the magazine is well-established so people can keep up to date
with the magazines being produced. Both magazines use a main cover lines that are
in a larger font than the rest of the magazines but smaller font than the masthead
this is because the main cover line is what the target audience will look for after
looking at the genre. In both magazines the main cover line is placed next to the
main images as they both complement each other. Lastly both magazines use
different coloured fonts this develops the codes and conventions because

In what way does your media product use, develop

or challenge forms and conventions of media
products?

My student magazine challenges the forms and conventions of media

products because it has three people as the main image using direct
address whereas normally it would only be one person in the main
image using direct address. My main image also used a long shot but
stereotypically a medium long shot is used which is a shot taken from
the legs up. The ELLE magazine has one elite person (Kim Kardashian)
featured in the main image using a mid shot but no direct address which
challenges the codes of conventions of media products. My magazine
placed the masthead to the left and the ELLE magazine places the
masthead across the centre of the magazine. This challenges codes and
conventions because usually mastheads are placed across the centre so
they can grab the target audiences attention, making the masthead the
first thing they see. In my magazine I allowed the background in the
main image but the ELLE magazine has no background. This challenges
the codes and conventions because normally you wouldnt see the
background in the main image, I did this because I wanted to show the
target audience the locations available to them at the college.
