SECTION REVIEW: DRIVES

Drives, (motivation states) interact with incentives(the
object of drives)
Regulatory drives (hunger) promote homeostasis
Nonregulatory drives ( sex) serves other purposes.
Mammalian drives classified by function into other
categories such as regulatory, safety, reproductive, social
and educative.
Different drives involve different central systems

REWARD MECHANISMS IN THE

BRAIN
3 interrelated components of reward- Wanting, Liking, reinforcement
Medial forebrain bundle and nucleus accumbens are pathways of the
brains reward system
Release of dopamine makes you want, also crucial to reinforcement
Release of endorphins makes you like
Addictive drugs and gambling may override the mechanism that shuts
down dopamine release.

HUNGER: AN EXAMPLE OF A
REGULATORY DRIVE
Major barrier is to survive by eating
Robust hunger mechanisms leads us to search for food, eat when
available, experience pleasure when we eat
Natural selection built into us satiety mechanisms which keep us from
over eating and becoming obese.
More people die of starvation then obesity in many parts of the world
In North America- obesity has become a major health problem
