Enjoyment of Just Dance 3 on Xbox Based on Resting Heart Rate

Brienna Yonge EXS111-604

Abstract
Beginning in the 20 century and
leading up to the present day, video
games have been an easy form of
entertainment. Unfortunately, there
has been a negative aura associated
with video games, as many players
will binge and play games for hours
on end. Binge playing has caused a
more sedentary lifestyle, and has led
to higher obesity rates in Americans.
The use of Exergaming could help to
reverse this epidemic. These games
allow people to engage in physical
activity and move while still
participating in an activity they love.
th

Hypothesis
It is hypothesized that people with
higher resting heart rates will have
lower rates of enjoyments than
those with lower resting heart rates.

Results
Overall, the average resting heart
rates of males and females who
participated in Just Dance 3 was
73.7. On a scale of 1 to 10
participants were asked to rate their
enjoyment levels after playing the
game. The average overall
enjoyment level was 6.39. Heart
rates below 73 had an average
enjoyment of 6.06, whereas heart
rates above 73 averaged enjoyment
level of 6.78.

Conclusion
According to the data, students
with higher heart rates had higher
enjoyment levels on average. This
goes against the hypothesis.
Students with lower resting heart
rates tended to have lower
enjoyment rates, most likely
because it took them longer to get
into it and get their heart rate
higher. Given sufficient resources,
I would perform a similar
experiment, but get a larger and
more diverse group of students.
Seeing as that all of these
students are exercise science
majors they are all most likely
active and in decent shape
physically. A more diverse group of
students would give better results
into the exergaming research. I
would also choose a few different
games, but keep them similar to
Just Dance 3, so they will all be
close on the level of physical
activity.
