Diligent Student
JG is a boy in second grade. He enjoys science and
is one of the most diligent students that I have had
the privilege to work with.
If presenting JG with a difficult task, he never fails to
complete the task even if it involves missing recess
to complete the given task.
Although this is a small glimpse of JG, we cannot
overlook his sweet and gently spirit!

Data Gathering
Momentary Interval Data Gathering
I observed JG in three different setting over a two week period.
Observations were taken in both whole group and small group instruction.
I used a momentary interval data gathering method where I observed JG
for 2 minutes with 10 second intervals. I recorded the times JG was
engaging in the expected behavior at the end of each interval. During my
data gathering I also was able to randomly gather data on one of JGs
peers.

Interview with Parents and Grandparents

I had the opportunity to personally interview his parents to gather more
information about his study skills at home.

Results
Based on the results, I can conclude that JG has a challenge
with staying on task for the majority of the time. His peer is
on task 100% of the time, while JG is on tack only 40% of the
time. This was a significant change when compared with his
peer. In these observations JGs was significantly off task and
not engaged in the expected behavior as his peers were.
However, after speaking to his parents and gathering more
information, I have observed and concluded that JG struggles
to stay on task during the academic areas in which he
struggles.

Reading Goal
1) JG is able to read basic sight words and uses picture clues to
identify words in a text. He decodes simple one syllable words with
short vowels but has difficulty reading words with multiple syllables.
He fails to use decoding strategies to read unknown words in a given
passage. Typical children his age, read more than two syllable words
in a given sentence and use their decoding strategies to read
unknown words.
By the end of the school year, JG will be able to fluently read one
syllable CVC words with 100% accuracy.
By the end of the second quarter, JG will be able to read two syllable
words with assistance from an adult with an 80% accuracy.

Writing Goal
2) JG is expected to write a 3-5 sentence paragraph in second grade.
Given a paragraph starter, JG writes two sentences, making many
punctuation, spelling, spacing, and penmanship errors, in his written
sentences. His classmates are writing 3-5 sentence paragraphs
without a sentence starter. JG does not understand the sequence of
sentence structure or flow therefore, does not incorporate it in his
writing.
a) Across all environments, JG will write two sentences with a level of
performance by using correct punctuation, beautiful penmanship,
and correct spelling with 70% accuracy.
b) JG will meet this goal by receiving a writing journal in which he is
to make daily journal entry.

No matter what your age, we always learn something!

If a child cannot learn in a way we teach, we must teach in
a way the child can learn - unknown
I learned that observational methods work well with
gathering data on a particular student, although testing
may also be an important factor too. Observing a child
based on their behaviors during a given day or subject may
provide an opportunity to gather the results to come to the
conclusion as to how to better teach this particular child.

Next Steps
Provided with the opportunity to purchase a low
tech AT device, I had the privilege to present JG with
a Hokki stool in his favorite color.
Partnering alongside the parents to assist JG in
getting an eyeglass exam and receiving reading
glasses ~ In this favorite color red
Its the small things in life that allow a child to
succeed and reach their full potential in life!!
