o It can be analyzed as AND function of high density and speed.

o This technology is used as an alternate of the previous bipolar, ECL and CMOS in the market.

o In some applications (in which there is finite budget for power) the BiCMOS speed performance is better than the that of bipolar.

o This technology is well suited for the intensive input/output applications.

o The applications of BiCMOS were initially in RISC microprocessors rather than traditional CISC microprocessors.

o This technology excels its applications, mainly in two areas of microprocessors such as memory and input/output.

o It has a number of applications in analog and digital systems, resulting in the single chip spanning the analog-digital boundary.

o It overpass the gap permitting course of action and circuit margins to be crossed.

o It can be used for sample and hold applications as it provides high impedance inputs.

o This is also used in applications such as adders, mixers, ADC and DAC.

o To conquer the limitations of bipolar and CMOS operational amplifiers the BiCMOS processes are used in designing the operational amplifiers. In Operational amplifiers, high
gain and high frequency characteristics are desired. All these desired characteristics can be gained by using these BiCMOS amplifiers
..
The integration of high density low power BiCMOS arrays and high
speed bipolar drivers produces gate arrays that not only are faster
than comparable CMOS but consume far less power then fellow ECL
arrays whose device density is approximately the same.

MIXED SIGNAL TECHNOLOGY

BICMOS is the right system for developing mixed signal system.cmos logic for digital functions and
bipolar devices for analog and rf functions.
To isolate the noise generated in the digital part from the rf and analog parts, soi bicmos technology will
be the future technology for mixed signal technology for rf and analog parts.
This will make complementary bicmos with pnp, npn, cmos all on the same chip.
Modern BiCMOS, invented by Intel, hit the market in 1992.
Ever-increasing clock frequencies on motherboards of PCs and workstations may require that the VLSI /
ULSI chips be made in BiCMOS. (Witness the Intel, AMD, and Cyrix mP chips.) n
Central Processing Units (CPUs) of minisupercomputers can be implemented in BiCMOS, with
packing density and dissipation advantages over ECL. (e.g., the Cray Research Baby Cray J916
Computer)
TTL will soldier on in motherboard SSI and MSI applications, where BiCMOS does not boast an
advantage.
But the BiCMOS party may be over when supply voltages drop below 1.8 V. BJTs have a fixed turn-
on voltage; MOSFET thresholds can be reduced to at least 0.3V for room temperature operation.

Note that although each column pair in the memory array
has its own differential-pair
amplifier, current can flow only in the sense amplifier of
the selected column. The current
source of the bipolar differential pair is provided by an
nMOS device, which is controlled
by the column select signal. Also, the column pull-up
operation is usually provided by
bipolar transistors in this BiCMOS memory array.
