Why understand Tanners Sexual
Maturity Rate Scoring System?
As a tool to assess normal male-
female secondary sexual traits
Observe body changes in accord to
other developmental issues
Tanner rates
1-2: 10-13 years old (early
adolescent)
3-5: 14-16 years old (middle
adolescent)
5: 17-20 years old (late adolescent)
How to score sexual maturity
using Tanner method?
Female: observe pubic hair and
breast
Male: observe pubic hair, penis and
testes
For lab. exercise---students must
observe their own bodies
