A data logger, is an electronic instrument that

records measurements at set intervals over a
period of time.

Depending on the particular data

logger, measurements can include: air
temperature, humidity, current and voltage,
pressure, dissolved oxygen, soil moisture and
many more.
 pH METER

ApH meteris an instrument used to measure acidity or

alkalinityofasolutionwhicharealsoknowaspH.
ThepHvalueofasubstanceisdirectlyrelatedtotheratioof
the hydrogen ion [H+] and the hydroxyl ion [OH-]
concentrations.
Higher OH- concentration, the pH greater than 7 and it is
basic.
HigherH+concentration,thepHlessthan7anditisacid.
The OH- and H+ concentration same, the pH is 7 and it is
neutral.

PROCEDURE
Prepare 0.01 M CaCl2
Dissolve 1.11 g of solid calcium chloride in a 1000mL volumetric
flaskwithenoughdistilledwater,thenfilltheflaskuntilthereis1L
ofCaCl2.

Preparing Soil Mixture

Take50gofsoilandplaceitintoa250mlbeakerandpour100mlof
0.01MCaCl2solutionintothebeaker.
MixthesoilandtheCaCl2thoroughlyandstironceevery3minutes
for15minutes.
The soil mixture should sit for at least 5 minutes to form into 2
layers.

Calibrating pH meter
Turn on the pH meter and take around 30 minutes to warm up the
meter.
Take the probe out of its storage solution and rinse it with distilled
water and blot dry with Kimwipes or Shurwipes.Avoid rubbing the
probeasithasasensitivemembranearoundit.
Forcalibrating,placetheprobeintothebufferswithpH4,pH7and
pH9andpressthecalibratebuttontomeasure.
Oncethecalibrationdone,thepHmetercanbeusebutmakesureto
rinsetheprobewithdistilledwatereverytimeaftermeasuringpHofa
solution.

Measuring pH value
Rinse the probe sensor with distilled water before using it to
measure.
UsethepHprobetomeasurethepHofthetoplayerofthesoil
mixtureinthebeaker.
StirthetoplayerofwatergentlyandwaitforthepHreadingto
stabilize.WhenthepHreadingisstabilized,recorditspHvalue.

onthepHofthesoil.
