THE ROAD NOT TAKEN
by
ROBERT FROST
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
HISTORY
Published in 1916 as the first poem in the collection of Mountain
Interval.
Inspired by Edward Thomas, a friend of the poet, because of his
indecisiveness in choosing between remaining a critic or becoming a
poet.
This poem was the last straw in Edward Thomas decision to enlist.
He was later killed in France during World War 1.

ANALYSIS OF STANZAS
FIRST STANZA:
Two roads represent two options in life whereas yellow wood may
represent the season this poem was written; autumn.
The poet could not choose both options, therefore he stopped to
think about which option should he choose.
He observed and analysed both options to see where they led him
and also the challenges and obstacles that lied in each option.
SECOND STANZA:
The poet had finally chosen an option.
He thought the option he had chosen was easier and had less
challenges.
Because the option he chose looked more appealing than the other
one.
However, both options are equally challenging.
THIRD STANZA:
Neither of the options were less chosen by others (SparkNotes).
The poet remembered the option that was not chosen.
He wished to choose that option someday but he doubted whether he
would have the chance to take that option.
He questioned himself whether he should quit his journey with the
chosen option and return to square one to try the other option.
FOURTH STANZA:
The poet regretted his decision.
It is unclear what the last stanza means but it could be that
i. The poet had chosen the option that was not popular among others (less
traveled), or
ii. The poet had chosen the option that was used by many because he trusted
others intuition more than his own, or
iii. The poet had taken risk by choosing the option that was not used by many but
it did not pay off
Whatever the meaning was, it had changed his life.
ANALYSIS OF POEM
Making decision
Life is about making decisions.
You should be wise in choosing your path in life.

Stick by your choice

It would be challenging, but life would differ if you face the
challenges instead of whining.
Do not lose hope and waver although the decision you made may not
be the best.
Give your full commitment to what you are doing.
Do not be afraid to restart
Dilemma
The path that you have not chosen will always haunt you.
It will seduce you with mirages of comfort to force you to quit.
Overcome the dilemma so that the decision made will look bearable.

The will to explore new things

Take risk.
Do not fall under others intuition.
The security that your comfort zone provides will not last.
