Ice-breaking Activities

Scenario: You are a new trainee teacher in a rural school. You have been assigned to conduct a
series of activities with 30 low proficiency 13 year old students . Use the following information to

design your activity.

Activity 1

Design a language learning activity using a paper chatterbox. Write the procedures for conducting
this activity.
Curriculum theme: People
Language use: Interpersonal Skills
Learning outcomes: Make friends and keep friendships by talking about self, family,
friends, interests, past events, feelings, and understanding when others talk about
themselves
Specifications (Level 1): Asking simple questions politely to get information and responding
appropriately to questions.
Language focus: Wh-questions
Duration of activity: 20 minutes
Activity 2

Design a language learning activity using a paper spinning wheel. Write the procedures for

conducting this activity.

Learning outcomes: Listen to, read, view and respond to literary works by recognizing
elements in a story such as characters and setting
Specification (Level 2): Making simple predictions as to what might happen next.
Duration of activity: 60 minutes

Step 1: Distribute a piece of A4 paper to each student.
Step 2: Instruct each student to draw an emoticon.
Step 3: Inform students that they are given 3 minutes to complete the task.
