    Nephroblastoma, also known as Wilms tumor, is the most common type of kidney cancer that develops in children. In the 1950s and 1960s, nephroblastoma had a very poor prognosis, but treatment has advanced significantly with the practice of combining surgery with radiotherapy or chemotherapy, leading to a current success rate of approximately 90%. Nephroblastoma is thought to originate from special embryonic cells called metanephric blastema that are involved in kidney development in the womb and sometimes persist after birth as nephrogenic rests, leaving children susceptible to developing this type of cancer.
