One gauge of being a critical reader is
your ability to spot which statements are
facts and which are opinions.
There are authors who seem to present
their opinions as facts
Facts
May pertain to people, places, events,
dates, animals, and other phenomena that
are not subject for interpretation,
judgment, or inference.
They can be verified or checked for
accuracy using available references.
They may also be labeled as true or false
They are highly unemotional and are
purely denotative in nature
Opinion
Opinions express personal preference or
value judgments
Hence, they cannot be proven and verified.
They are influenced by an individual’s
experience, values, beliefs, and background
knowledge, making them highly connotative.
Often, they express comparison and
subjective description using words like good,
bad, more, better, best, and most.
They are introduced by words like I believe, I
think, in my view, probably, seems, appears, and
possibly.
Though readers can distinguish facts from opinions, in
some cases, these two can be blended, consciously or
unconsciously, for emphasis and/or style.
