MISSION OVERVIEW

• Mission Objective
• Penicillin
• Bacteriophage
• Hypothesis
• Why?
DESIGN: CONCEPT OF OPERATIONS
RECAP OF FLIGHT
• Burst at: 65 minutes
• Flight time: 113 minutes
• All systems functioned as expected

EXPECTED DATA: GEIGER COUNTER
RESULTS AND ANALYSIS: PICTURES
RESULTS AND ANALYSIS: PENICILLIN
1.3 % loss in potency
RESULTS AND ANALYSIS:
BACTERIOPHAGE

Discovery: E. Coli is sensitive

FAILURE ANALYSIS: HUMIDITY SENSOR

• Failure a result of faulty sensor

• Discovered through comparison of other
team’s data
• Tested with new sensor
FAILURE ANALYSIS: BACTERIOPHAGE
TESTING
• Recommended to use tetracycline as a
catalyst
• This caused apoptosis, eliminating
conclusive data
• Confirmed by comparison of desired results
CONCLUSIONS

• Hypothesis: The penicillin would not lose

potency, and radiation shielding would not be
necessary. (WRONG)
• Data told us: Penicillin can lose potency after
only 1 hour of time in near-space, where
radiation does not approach levels seen in
space
• Discovery: Penicillin needs radiation shielding
while being transported for long periods
through space
READY TO FLY: ORION’S BRAWN

• Return internal components to pre-flight

location
• Seal box
READY TO FLY: SPACE GRANT
• Storage and activation:
• Stored in closed, room temperature environment to
not destroy electrical components
• Check solder connections
• Insert batteries
• Turn all 3 switches on as per motion described on
box
• Other:
• No camera in box
• New humidity sensor necessary

APPENDIX: MESSAGE TO FALL 2016
• This class is amazing and you will have so much fun doing it. It’s not
similar to other projects courses, in than you get a much better
understanding of the aerospace industry, something that is truly valuable.
I hope you enjoy your experience!
APPENDIX: LESSONS LEARNED
• What would you have done differently if you could do this over?
Understood more about past classes mistakes, to make sure we did not
repeat any
• What could you have done to get different results?
We could have looked at other team’s final reports to get a better
understanding of what to do
