Lesson 3.

3 Completing the Square

Goal: I can create perfect square trinomial expressions

and use this skill to solve quadratic equations
Review: Square Root Method
𝐸𝑥) (𝑥 − 3)2 −4 = 76 What does 𝑥 = 3 ± 4 5 mean?
Factor: 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 2 + 16𝑥 + 64

What do you notice about the factors?

Perfect square trinomial: A function of the form 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐

that can be written as 𝑥 + 𝑑 𝑥 + 𝑑 𝑜𝑟 𝑥 + 𝑑 2
How do we make perfect square trinomials?

𝑥 2 + 6𝑥+ ?

Expression Value of c needed to complete the square Expression written as (𝒙 + 𝒅)(𝒙 + 𝒅)

𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐𝒙 + 𝒄

𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙 + 𝒄

𝒙𝟐 + 𝟖𝒙 + 𝒄

How are the numbers we chose for c related to the coefficients of x in the first column?
How many single tiles do I need
to “complete the square?”

𝑥2 x x x

Completing the Square
Ex: 𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 + What value will make this a perfect square?

Ex: 𝑥 2 − 18𝑥 +

Ex: 𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 +
Try to solve…
Ex: 𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 + 36
When you can’t factor, solve by completing the square

Ex: 𝑥 2 + 16𝑥 + 164 = 0

Solving by Completing the Square
Ex: 𝑥 2 = 12𝑥 − 96
Solving by Completing the Square

COMPLETING THE SQUARE ONLY WORKS FOR a = 1!!

IF a IS NOT 1, WE HAVE TO DIVIDE EVERYTHING BY THE a VALUE
Ex: 2𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 = 28
