Two widely used series are the “in touch and life
styles” series, the former (an series for beginning
students) by Castro and Kimbrough (1980) and the
latter (an intermediate series) by Lozano and
Sturtevant (1981). Both use a situational organization
with functional content.
Finocctiaro and Brumfit provide a
sample “curriculum” that illustrate the
organizing rules of functions and the
possible relationship of the functions and it
relationship to situations, structures and
activities.
Positive characteristic of notional / functional syllabi :
It can often demonstrate dramatic results in the
short term but still fail to develop learners overall
ability to function in a new language.
