PROBLEM NO. 2
(L. CEMIC THERMODYNAMICS IN MINERAL SCIENCES 6.5 PROBLEMS P. 275)

The interaction parameter ( WG) of

hypothetical regular binary solution A-B has
a value of 20 kJ/mol.
a. Calculate the critical temperature of mixing
b. Calculate the spinodal compostions at 700 °C
(a.) calculate the critical temperature of mixing
Given: Find:
( WG) = 20 kJ/mol = 20 x 103 J/mol Tc (critical temperature)
R= 8.3144 J/mol* K

Solution:

Tc = WG / 2R
= (20 x 103 J/ mol)/ [2(8.3144 J/mol*K)]
Tc = 1202. 73 K or 929. 58 °C
(b.) calculate the spinodal compositions at 700 °C

Given: Find:
( WG) = 20 kJ/mol = 20 x 103 spinodal compositions (x)
J/mol
R= 8.3144 J/mol K
T=700 °C + 273.15 K = 973. 15 K
Tc = 1202. 73 K = 929. 58 °C
