GADGETS

INTRODUCTION

We would all agree that software applications are more

appropriately used in the classroom as tools rather than as
toys. Certainly, this philosophy is why policy makers have
invested billions of dollars incorporating technology into the
classroom in the past 20 years.
Some of the modern gadgets that support learning
includes,
 PPT (Power Point Presentation)
 Interactive Whiteboard
 Smart Boards
 Projectors
 OHP
 Films
 LCD
WHAT IS PPT?

PPT or Power Point Presentation is a presentation which

is a collection of individual slides that contain information
on a particular topic.
CHARACTERISTICS OF PPT
PPT is one of the most widely used software applications in
classrooms.
 Power Point is a well-known, versatile and easy-to-use tool.
 Readily available as it is a part of Microsoft Office.
 It captures the student’s attention and helps to keep them
interested.
 Enables students to construct creative presentations for their
projects and assignments.
 Act as a useful and marketable technology skills.
 Allow user to import graphics, audio, quotes music or link to
web pages.
 Optimizes a student’s visual learning experience and allows to
incorporate multimedia.
PRACTICAL USES IN TEACHING

 Present information or instruction to the entire class.

 Creategraphically enhanced information and
instructions for the learning centres.
 Createtutorials, reviews or quizzes for individual
students.
 Display student work and curriculum materials.
 Canbe modified and used over and over again each
time you teach those lessons.
Power Point allows teacher to be creative with activities
such as,
 Flash Cards
 Field Trip Slide Shows
 Autobiographical Stories

 Interactive Book Reports

 Group Slide Shows
 Science Presentation
 Student Portfolios
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF
TEACHING BY USING MICROSOFT
POWER POINT
Advantages
 Engaging multiple learning styles.
 Increasing visual impact.
 Improving learners focus.
 Analysing and synthesizing complexities.
 Increasing spontaneity and interactivity.
 Increasing wonder.
Disadvantages
 Reinforce traditional teacher centred approaches
(lectures).
 Learner’s inactivity (slide show).
 Distracting (poorly designed slides).
 Danger: Limit learner’s understanding as they may only
look at the key points (reductive).
 Needs ‘compactible’ hardware.
 Too much information and too fast in presenting (no
learners engagement with content).
 Equipment failure.
INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD

What is Interactive Whiteboard?

An interactive whiteboard, also known as a smart board, is
an interactive display in the format of a whiteboard that
reacts to user input either directly or through other
devices.
CHARACTERISTICS
 A powerful tool in the classroom adding interactivity
and collaboration, allowing the integration of media
content into the lecture.
 Create a wide range of learning opportunities.
 Many features are available when using an interactive
whiteboard, Some of which include,
i. Adding annotations.
ii. Highlighting text.
iii. Add notes and drawings and then save.
iv. Show pictures and educational videos to the whole
class.
v. Demonstrate the content available on a website.
INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS AS
A PEDAGOGICAL TOOL

1. Interactive Teaching
The teacher can all upon the students to interact with the
whiteboard themselves. The teacher can sit at the
computer, with the student at the whiteboard and the class
offering suggestions and contributing ideas.
.
2. Interaction in Practice
Interactive whiteboards are ideal for demonstrating
software in any discipline. The teacher/presenter can run
software on the board, interacting with it using his finger,
demonstrating the features and tools of the software to a
large number of students.
3. Group Interaction
Interactive whiteboards promote group discussion and
participation. They are an effective tool for brain storming
as notes made on the screen scan be turned into text and
saved. It is an ideal tool for small group work.
Advantages
 The interactive whiteboard allows a large group to sit and participate
comfortably in a presentation as opposed to a group crowding around a
smaller computer screen.
 You can enhance any presentation or lesson by easily integrating video,
animation, graphics text and audio with the spoken presentation.
 You can display material from a number of source as CD-ROOMS, websites,
DVDs, Vans tapes and television.
 Notes, diagrams and entire lessons or presentations can be saved, archived
and added to the internet or disk. So, presentation or classwork in progress
can be saved ready for the next period or school day.
 Create an environment of collaboration and interaction, allowing the students
to be more engaged and therefore more likely to learn and remember the
information.
 Able to link to a response system that displays response immediately to the
board.
Disadvantages
 Teachers may focus more on the new technology than
on the lesson.
 The technology of the whiteboard may distract the
students from the actual lesson if the whiteboard is used
as the focus instead of the aid to the lesson.
 It could potentially slow the lesson down.
 Technology always has the opportunity to fail, such will
be unable to continue the lesson.
 The technology is expensive.
