Introduction
• What is Refrigeration ?
Refrigeration is a process in which work done to
remove heat from low temperature reservoir and transferring it to
a high trmperature reservoir .

Use : to maintain temperature of space lower than that of

surrounding temperature.
to lowering temperature of space to decrease the rate of
bacterial growth so as to preserve food or dairy products.
SOLAR REFRIGERATION
• Refrigerator which works on electricity provided by
solar energy is known as Solar Refrigerator . Those
systems works on energy which is directly provided
by sun and may include photovoltaic and solar
thermal energy.
• Solar refrigerators operates on the same principle as
normal vapour compression refrigerators but ,
incorporates low voltage (12 or 24 V)DC rather than
mains voltage AC types.
• Available sizes : 10 – 85 litres of vaccine storage
capacity.
Literature Review
• (1) Bottle cooler using Peltier Effect :
Capacity : 20 litres .
Various components used : Soloar cells(72
solar cells) , batteries(12V ,6 Amp.) , Cabinet ,
peltier module , heat sink , fan , SMPS (to
convert AC into DC).
(from paper published by Assistant Professor,
SRM University , Gaziabad, India.)
Vaccination Box
• To store vaccine at low temperature while
transport and storage in rural area .
• Power consumption – 90 W
• Operating Voltage – 230 V .
• Storage Capacity : 20 lit.
• Refrigerant used : R134a
• Insulation : PUF with 2.5 cm thickness.
(Paper published by Dept. if renewable
energy engg. , Udaipur, INDIA. )
Scope
• In the present world , fossil fuels reserve of the
world is continuously decreasing and use of
non – conventional energy resources is gaining
high importance . Solar energy is considered as
best source of non-conventional energy .
• In many developing countries , peoples live in
rural or remote areas where electricity is yet
unavailable .
• Eco-friendly.
Objectives
• To make eco-friendly refrigeration system at
low cost.
• Compare result of this system to conventional
refrigeration .
• Increase COP of the system.
• Providing refrigeration in those areas where
electrical supply is not continuous .
How solar refrigerators works ?
-These system consist of photovoltaic panel ,
thermal storage , vapour compressor , reservoir
and electric control.
- Conversion of sunlight into DC electrical
power makes refrigeration possible.
- The DC electrical power drives the compressor
to circulate the refrigerant.
TYPES OF SOLAR
REFRIGERATION
• Photovoltaic Operated Refrigeration Cycle
• Solar mechanical refrigeration
• Absorption refrigeration

• Photovoltaic refrigeration cycle –

-direct conversion of solar radiation into
direct current (DC) using semiconductor material.
-Direct current rotates DC motor which is
coupled to compressor .
.
• Required Conditions –
Incident radiations of 1000 W/m^2
with module temperature of 25 degree celcius.
• Schematic Diagram –
Disadvantages :
COP of the system : Refrigerating effect / Input solar energy
-Low COP , High cost.
-small refrigeration capacity

• Advantages -

- Eco – friendly .
- Supply the refrigerator with energy for several hours at
night or in the absence of sunlight .
- works on AC as well as DC.
METHODOLOGY

- Storage capacity : 20 litres

- Type of refrigeration : Vapour Compression
System
- Refrigerant : Ammonia
- Operating Voltage : 230 V
- Max. and min. internal temperature : -4 to 4
degree Celsius.
- Insulation Used : PUF with 2.5 cm thickness
Summary
• Design and modify the refrigeration system
which is based on non-conventional source of
energy to reduce global warming and ozone
layer depletion.
