Reinforced Concrete Design 1

Jyrus Jyles D. Cadiente, M.Eng.

Structural Engineer
I. Introduction

NSCP 402
Sand + Gravel = AGGREGATE
Cement + Aggregate + Water = CONCRETE
Concrete alone = Good for compression only!!
Steel alone = Good for tension only!!
Therefore:
Concrete + Steel = REINFORCED CONCRETE

Reinforced Concrete = Good for combined compression and tension

Structural members subjected to both compression and tension are

beam, column, suspended slab

Members that are subjected to compression only is pedestal and slab ob fill.
It does not need tension reinforcement.
Ex: Flagpole and sidewalk
NSCP 402
Light weight concrete 5.5 to 18.1 KN/m3

Normal weight concrete 18.1 to 33 KN/m3

Standard weight concrete 23.54 KN/m3
Heavy weight concrete 33 KN/m3 up
Es = 200,000 Mpa
