• Akbar reigned over an era of prosperity and progress in the Mughal Empire.
Aurangzeb

• One of the most controversial figures in Mughal history, Aurangzeb took the
Mughal throne after killing his brother and imprisoning his father.
• As a dedicated Muslim he sought to end drinking, gambling, and the custom
of suttee (the cremation of a widow on her husbands funeral pyre).
• Aurangzeb also forbade the building of Hindu temples and forced Hindu
followers to convert to Islam.
• His policies along with the slow decline of the empire divided the Mughals
and created much civil unrest including revolts.
