tention at the extremes
of the element

BRACES OR SUSPENDERS

• Suspenders are longitudinal elements as cables.

• these support the axial forces of
tension to extremes of the element.
• The bending forces are not supported by the
Suspenders
• The forces of flexion or torque is the tendency of
the body to rotate by a force
STRUTS

• Struts are vertical elements .

• these support the axial forces of compression
• the dead loads are temporarily helped by the
suspenders.
• The structural elements are helped by the Struts
,when they are being repaired.
• The bending forces are not supported by the
struts, just like the struts
COLUMNS
• Those members subjected mainly to axial
compressive forces

• A column can also be subjected to bending forces

• Generally the columns are vertical mienbros but

can be inclined
