This study examines the correlation between students' attitude, motivation, and speaking ability in English. It was conducted with 58 senior high school students in Lamongan, Indonesia. The study used questionnaires to measure students' attitude and motivation towards English speaking. It also included an English speaking test to assess students' speaking ability. The study aimed to determine if students with better attitudes and motivation had stronger speaking skills. The results could help teachers understand how to improve students' English speaking and guide future research.

MOTIVATION TOWARDS SPEAKING ABILITY Where I did my research? • I did my research in MA Matholi’ul Anwar Lamongan. • There are two reasons why senior high school level was chosen. First, in senior high school, English is a compulsory subject, and one of the subjects in the national final exams (UAN and UAS). Thus, the students’ attitude and motivation towards learning English may be vary. Second, the students are considered mature enough to identify their attitude and motivation to answer a questionnaire. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY • The students were not interested in learning to speak English because the desire of their own selves was lacking. • The pronunciation English and Indonesian was very much different. • Some of the students had negative attitude toward all of the subjects but it was in contrast with their score in English skill. • (It means that the naughty students sometimes had good score in their speaking ability and active students sometimes had low score) • I increasingly curious about the attitude of the students’ English classes. • This study is intended to be conducted in a public school because the students in public school are very enthusiastic in learning the subjects and show positive attitude but their scores sometimes do not support it. • I’m curious to know whether there is a difference between public school and religious schools Research problem
• “Do students having a better attitude and
motivation have a better speaking ability?” Objective of study
• The purpose of this study is to know whether
there is correlation between students’ attitude and students’ motivation towards speaking ability. Assumption
• There is correlation between attitude and
motivation Delimitation of the study • The study aims to see the correlation between attitude and motivation towards students’ speaking ability, particularly in transactional conversation. Significance of the Study
• The result of this study is expected to contribute to the
theory that existed before. In this case theories of attitude and motivation can help the student toward their speaking ability and are also useful for teachers and other researchers in subsequent research studies. • If there is a high positive correlation between each factor and speaking ability, it implies that it is safe to predict students’ speaking ability by observing their motivation and attitude. • the result of the present study would be a useful guidance for the teachers and other researchers to know the correlation of the attitude and motivation toward students’ speaking ability. Research design
• This study employed correlational research
design to examine the degree of correlation between attitude and motivation towards students’ ability in speaking. Quantitative approach was used because it deals with numerical data and statistical analysis (Latief, 2015) • The predictors were X 1 as the attitude and X 2 as motivation which could not be manipulated by the researcher. Criterion variable was Y as students’ speaking ability. There was the correlation coefficient. • There were two main points, which became the focus of the study. They were correlation between student’s attitude (X1) and motivation (X2) towards speaking ability (Y) and They were the correlation between students’ attitudes (X1) and their speaking ability (Y), the correlation between students’ motivation (X2) and their speaking ability (Y). Setting and Subjects of the Study • The population of this study was students of MA Matholi’’ul Anwar Simo Lamongan, 58 students as the population. Therefore the sampling procedures needed to be done. The current study employs purposive random sampling technique to select the sample of the study. This technique was chosen to avoid awkwardness of selecting random sampling of individual. In other words, the already belong to certain classes and it is hard to select them randomly as individual. Research Instrument
• In order to measure the students’ attitude and
motivation towards speaking ability, questionnaires and speaking test were employed as suggested by Henerson et al (1987) and Creswell (2012). There were two kinds of questionnaires: attitude and motivation. The questionnaire was adapted from Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB), Istianti (2013) and Apriyani (2015). Collecting Data Procedures
• The first step to collect the data is choosing
the participants. The participants of this study are third grade of senior high school. The next step is choosing the instrument. The instrument will be used in this study is questionnaire and speaking test. Speaking Test
• The students were asked to have transactional
conversation in pairs about asking and giving opinion (based on K-13 lesson) (Appendix 3) RESEARCH FINDINGS
