Human resource planning (HRP)
• Is a way of assisting the best deployment of human resources
and can help organisation to:
• Assess future recruitment needs
• Anticipate and possibly avoid redundancies
• Formulate training programmes
• Develop a promotion and career development policy including
succession planning
• Keep staff costs to a minimum while permitting salaries to be
competitive
• Assess future premises requirements.
The role of the human resource function is two-fold:

1. To participate in the decision process by providing information

and opinion on each option, including.

2. To support line managers dealing with the people consequences

of implementing the
decision. Information already gathered provides the basis for a
human resource plan.
The manpower planning approach which addresses questions such
as:
• How many staff do we have/need?
• How are they distributed?
• What is the age profile?
• How many will leave in each of the next five years?
• How many will be required in one, five, ten years?
Human Resource Planning involves.
HRP can be divided into three main stages:

1.Forecasting labour requirements by examining

2. Assessing labour supply by

3. Matching the available supply against the forecast demand

by
HR planning process
Succession management is a key
strategy that you will probably
want to implement as a result
of your HR planning process.
Succession management addresses many of the
issues, such as:
• An aging workforce
• Increasing retirement rates
• Tight labor market
• Limited competitiveness, and
• Fast-paced changes in work.

PROCESS DESCRIPTION
Types of bottles kept on the conveyor belt
are:
Used bottles:

• 650 ml bottles
• 330 ml bottles (Pint Bottles)

New bottles:

• 650 ml bottles
• 330 ml bottles (Pint Bottles).

Each case of beer contains:

• 12 bottles of 650 ml
• 24 bottles of 330 ml
Productivity of 1 worker in 1 minute =

Average number of bottles kept on conveyor belt

Sampling Time
• Average number of bottles kept by 1 worker =

Number of bottles kept by ‘x’ workers

‘x’ workers

• Bottles loaded per minute by total number of

workers on the conveyor belt =
Average number of bottles kept by 1 worker * No. of workers
on conveyor belt
• Bottles loaded per hour by total number of
workers on the conveyor belt =

Bottles loaded per minute by total number of workers on the

conveyor belt * 60 minutes.

• Total number of cases produced per shift =

For 650 ml bottles =

Bottles loaded per hour * 8 hours
12 bottles
For 330 ml bottles =
Bottles loaded per hour * 8 hours
24 bottles
Facts & Findings:
• Each worker keeps approximately 4 bottles of 650 ml and 6
bottles of 330 ml on the conveyor belt.
• Productivity of each worker is approximately 30 bottles per
minute on the conveyor belt.
• When any worker takes break and leaves the conveyor belt,
another person is placed on the belt. This person is called as
reliever. Reliever is placed so that there is no loss of
productivity of workers.
• If the rejection of bottles is more, then it leads to additional
work for the workers of again loading rejected bottles on the
conveyor belt thus affecting their productivity.
• Breakdown in any machinery will lead to bottleneck at the
conveyor belt which in turn leads to workers sitting idle.
•It was observed that United Breweries has succeeded in
providing the employees with shifts so that the plant is working
continuously.

•All the safety measures have been embarked on the machine in

the form of instructions and the safety instruments like water
showers at machines, fire extinguisher etc. are checked regularly
on monthly basis.

•It was observed that the safety instructions to be followed by the

workers while operating on machine were neglected.

•It was observed that productivity incurred from 17 employees

was same as that of 20 employees leading to excess manpower
resulting in disguised employment.
Productivity of workers with the original number
of workers on the conveyor belt.
Productivity of workers when number of workers was reduced

from the conveyor belt

LEARNINGS
• Each worker keeps approximately 4 bottles of 650 ml and 6 bottles of
330 ml on the conveyor belt.

• Productivity of each worker is approximately 30 bottles per minute on

the conveyor belt.

• When any worker takes break and leaves the conveyor belt, another
person is placed on the belt. This person is called as reliever. Reliever is
placed so that there is no loss of productivity of workers.

• When the speed of the washer is low, it creates bottlenecks on the

conveyor belt thus decreasing the productivity of the workers.
