Fire Safety
Classes of fire Type of extinguisher to be
used
A(Solids) Water type, foam, DCP,
Wet Chemical
B(flammable liquids) DCP, FOAM, CO2

C(flammable gases) DCP

D(metals) DCP
F(kitchen fire) WET CHEMICAL

Electrical fire is not considered a class of fire, instead it

is taken as a ignition source
HAZARD
A object or situation that has the potential to cause harm is called
hazard. There are different types of hazards listed below:
• Biological
• Physical
• Chemical
• Ergonomics
• Phycological
Chemical Hazard Categories

• Corrosives • Explosives
• Flammables • Oxidizers
• Combustibles • Dangerous for the environment
• Harmful
• Toxic
• Irritant
Corrosives
Corrosive substances causes
destructive burns on the tissue
by chemical action at the site of
contact.

Materials causing skin

corrosion/burns or eye damage
on contact

Concentrated solutions of
strong acids and strong alkalis
Irritant
Dilute solutions of acids and
alkalis are labelled with the
'irritant' symbol

An immediate skin, eye or

respiratory tract irritant, or
narcotic.
Toxic chemicals
Toxic chemicals produce
injurious or lethal effects
upon contact with body
cells due to their chemical
properties.

Very poisonous chemicals

are labelled with the 'toxic'
symbol.
Harmful
Less poisonous chemicals are
labelled with the 'harmful'
symbol.
Flammables
Flammable substances are
those that readily catch fire
and burn in air

In addition to the normal

precautions of wearing eye
protection, anyone using a
highly flammable
substance should take care
to keep it away from flames
and sparks, and also from
oxidising substances.
Oxidizers
Oxidising substances do not
burn themselves, but they
provide oxygen for flammable
substances to burn.
Oxidisers are chemicals which
decompose readily under
certain conditions to yield
oxygen.
Oxidisers must not be stored
with flammables.
Potentially explosive chemicals
Chemicals when subjected
to heat, impact, or
friction, undergoes rapid
chemical change, evolving
large volumes of gases
which cause sudden
increase in pressure.
Heat, light, mechanical
shock and certain
catalysts can initiate
explosive reactions.
Dangerous To The Environment
Chemicals toxic to aquatic
wildlife.
This is a substance which
may harm or kill natural
species living in the
environment including
aquatic species, trees and
plants
Carcinogenic
Serious health hazard

A cancer-causing agent
(carcinogen) or substance
with respiratory,
reproductive or organ
toxicity that causes damage
over time (a chronic, or
long-term, health hazard).
SODIUM SILICATE
GLUE CANS
DIESEL
THINNER
KEROSINE OIL
Routes of entry
Routes of entry The main routes of entry of the chemicals into the
human body are:
• Inhalation into lungs.
• Absorption through skin membrane/cuts in the skin.
• Ingestion via mouth into the gastrointestinal system.
SPLL KIT
Chemical spill kits
Personal protective equipment, e.g., chemical cartridge respirators.

Actions to do in case of Spill:

• Report spill to Supervisor or Manager
• Control the Emergency and Minimize the Effect of the Spill
• Gather Information and Develop a Plan
• Clean Up Spill
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)—
• Devices and equipment that provides a barrier between an
employee and a hazardous environment
PPE

•Usage

•Availability

•Selection
• Adequate type and class
PPE
types
Head protection Eye and face
protection
Ear protection Respiratory protection
PPE types cont’d

• Arm and hand protection

Safe Work Practices
• No smoking while handling
• Always wear proper PPE
• Always handle with care
• Avoid skin contact
• Wash hands prior to leaving work area
Safe Work Practices

• Treat all unknown chemicals as hazardous materials

• Containers are NOT to be used for food preparation or consumption
• Use proper containment when transporting through work area
Categories of waste
For waste we have defined three categories of waste namely
• Hazardous waste
• Paper and board waste
• General waste
