 An induction motor or asynchronous

motor is an AC electric motor in which

the electric current in the rotor needed to
produce torque is obtained by
electromagnetic induction from the
magnetic field of the stator winding. An
induction motor can therefore be made
without electrical connections to the
rotor. An induction motor's rotor can be
either wound type or squirrel-cage type.
 Thus the three phase induction motor is:
 Self-starting.
 Less armature reaction and brush sparking
because of the absence of commutators and
brushes that may cause sparks.
 Robust in construction.
 Economical.
 Easier to maintain.
 An induction motor always runs at speed less
than synchronous speed. Because the rotating
magnetic field produced in the stator will
create flux in the rotor and hence will make the
rotor to rotate. Due to the lagging of flux
current in the rotor with flux current in the
stator, the rotor will never reach it's rotating
magnetic field speed, i.e. the synchronous
speed.
