PROBLEM NO.10
A prony brake for measuring the power generated of a
six cylinder, two stroke Diesel engine running at 2000
rpm indicates a reading of 180N. The length of the arm
of the prony brake is a 1.25 m. In an hour operation it
consumes 14kg of fuel with a heating value of
53,000KJ/kg. Determine the brake thermal efficiency.

A. 0.2391
B. 0.2857
C. 0.2583
D. 0.2286
• Given:

n or number of cylinders – 6
Two- Stroke Engine
N or speed – 2000rpm
F or Force – 180N
l or length of arm – 1.25m
t or duration -1hr
m or mass of fuel consumed- 14kg
CV or Heating Value – 53000
Required:
or Break Thermal Efficiency
• Solution:

Compute for the Brake Power of the Engine
BP = 2πNT , where T = Fxl
T = 180N(1.25m)
T = 225 N-m
Substitute the value of Torque to the equation
BP = 2π(2000rpm x )(225N-m)
BP = 47.1238898
• The
  formula for Brake Thermal Efficiency is
=
=
=
= 0.22863334276

Therefore the Brake Thermal Efficiency of the

Engine is 0.22863334276 and the Letter of the
correct answer is Letter D which is 0.2286.
