PROBLEM NO.10: A double square thread power screw has a mean radius of 80mm and a
pitch of 10mm is used to lift a load of 80KN. If friction of screw is 0.13 and collar torque is 20%
of input torque, determine the input torque required.

•
Given: r or mean radius – 80mm
p or pitch – 10mm
L or Load – 80KN
f or friction – 0.13
or collar torque – 20%

Required: Total Torque or

Diagram:
•  tanx =
Solution:

For double square thread: L=2P

tanx=
= 0.03978873577
T=()
=()
= 1.092297859 KN-m
Solving for the total torque:
= T+
But = 0.2
= T+ 0.2
0.8 = 1.092297859
=1.365372323 KN-m or 1365.372323N-m

Therefore the input torque required is 1365.372323N-m

PROBLEM NO.10: Four compression coil spring in parallel support a load of 360kg.
Each spring has a gradient of 0.717 kg/mm. Find the deflection.

Given: N or number of springs – 4

L or Load – 360kg
k or spring gradient- 0.717 kg/mm

Required: deflection of the spring or f

Diagram:
•
Solution:
For parallel springs the deflection is the same for each spring
= ==
Solve for the force on each spring
F=
=
= 90kg/spring
solve for the deflection
=
=
= 125.5230126mm

Since the springs are arranged in parallel = ===125.5230126mm
