PROBLEM NO.10
The difference between the head race and the tail race
of a hydro-electric plant is 190 m. The friction loss
through the penstock is equivalent to 8 m. Water flow
at the rate of 2.5 /sec. Power loss due to friction in the
turbine is 65 kw and the leakage loss is 0.02 /sec.
Determine the electrical power generated in kw if the
generator efficiency is 96%.
A.5052 kw
B.4188 kw
C.4631 kw
D.3942 kw
• Given:

h or difference of headrace and tail race – 190m
or friction loss in penstock – 8m
Q or volume flow rate – 2.5
l or leakage – 0.02
or Power loss in the turbine- 65000kw
or generator efficiency – 96%

Required:
GO or electrical power generated
• Diagram:

Solution:
Compute first for the turbine efficiency using the formula for
Turbine Output
= Qwh , where w = 9810
= (2.5 )9810 (190m-8m)()
= 0.01467983859
=1-
0.9853201614
• Solve
  for the Generated Output
GO = Qwh
GO = (2.5 )9810 (190m8m)(0.9853201614)(0.96)
GO = 4188327.936 W x
GO = 4188.327936 kW

Therefore the power generated by the hydroelectric

powerplant is 4188.327936 kW and the correct letter of
the answer is Letter B.
