PROBLEM NO.10: A 4-spline shaft (d= 0.75D, w= 0.24D, h=0.25D) and to slide when not under
load has a diameter of 2.5 in. Find the shearing stress if shearing force is 2500lbs. If hub length is
2inches.

Given: N or No. of spline – 4 D or Nominal Diameter – 2.5in

d or root diameter - 0.75D F or shearing force – 2500bs
w or width of spline - 0.24D l or hub length – 2inches
h or height of spline – 0.25D

Required: τ or shearing stress

Diagram:
•
Solution:
Use the formula for shear stress:
τ=
The Area being acted upon by the Force in a shearing stress is the width multiply by the length
of the key
τ=
Substitute the given values to the equation:
τ=
Since the width is in terms of Nominal diameter which is 2.5 in and there are 4 splines on the
shaft.
τ = 520.833333

Therefore the shearing stress of a 4-spline shaft having a shearing force of 2500lbs and width and
length of 0.6in and 2in respectively is 520.833333
PROBLEM NO.10: A cast iron flywheel is rotated at a speed of 1200rpm and having a rim mean
diameter of 2 feet. If the weight of the rim is 30lbs , what is the centrifugal force? Use factor
C=41.

•
Given: N or rotational speed – 1200rpm
or rim mean diameter – 2 feet
or weight of the rim – 30lbs
C or coefficient of fluctuation – 41

Required: or centrifugal force

Diagram:
•
Solution:
Solve for the tangential speed
v=π D N
= π (2feet) ()
= 125.6637061

Using centrifugal force formula:

=
Substitute the given values, r is the radius , g is the gravity
=

= 14,724 lbs

Therefore the centrifugal force of the flywheel by first getting the tangential speed then
substituting it to the formula is 14,724 lbs
