MARINA CARMONA
AND GABRIELA CEA
THALES OF MILETUS
• He was a pre-Socratic Greek
philosopher, mathematician and
astronomer from Miletus in Asia
Minor, he was born in a.C 624 and
he died in a.C 546.
• Many, most notably Aristotle, regard
him as the first philosopher in the
Greek tradition. Aristotle reported
Thales' hypothesis that the
originating principle of nature and
the nature of matter was a single
material substance: water.
IN MATHEMATICS...
Provided AC is a
diameter, angle
at B is constant
right(90°).
INTERCEPT THEOREM
• The intercept theorem, also known as Thales' theorem, is an
important theorem in elementary geometry about the ratios of
various line segments that are created if two intersecting lines are
intercepted by a pair of parallels. It is equivalent to the theorem
about ratios in similar triangles.
MATHEMATICAL CONTRIBUTIONS
• This method was then applied to other practical purposes the navegation. Is further assumed
that Thales already knew many of the foundations of geometry, such as the fact that any
diameter of a circle is divided into identical parts, that an isosceles triangle has by force two
equal angles at its base or relational properties between the angles formed by cutting two
parallel are a straight perpendicular line.
• The Egyptians had applied some of this knowledge for the division and fragmentation of their
land. This need arose from the Nile, with its constant floods, erasing the dividing lines of the
fields, so a way to measure again the ground was necessary. But the limited data with which
account, Thales would have spent in Greece much less space and more to the lines and
curves, reaching its geometry a greater degree of complexity and abstraction.
