MORT Analysis and IFAL

Analysis
MORT Analysis
• MORT – Management Oversight and Risk Tree
• Developed by Johnson W.G for the U.S Department of
Energy.
• MORT’s original objective was to reduce safety related
losses, by an order of magnitude.
MORT
• The MORT Logic Tree analyzes a top event down through:
-Oversights and Omissions events
-which are further developed through branches on:
Specific Control Factors &
Management System factors
A computerized version of MORT is available.
MORT
• MORT has two major functions.
1.Since the MORT logic diagram organizes risk, loss, and safety
program elements, it can be used as a master worksheet for accident
investigation and qualitative evaluation of programs.
2. It can be used as a subsystem in a comprehensive safety
management program of an organization. It is useful for emergency
planning.
IFAL Analysis
• IFAL – Instantaneous Fractional Annual Loss
Extensively used in the insurance industry.
- IFAL combines frequency and consequence aspects
associated with risk.
- It gives a single quantitative prediction of the losses that can
result from the operation of a process plant.
- IFAL is a product of three factors – a process factor, an
engineering factor and a management factor.
IFAL
Important application of IFAL
- To predict the effects of process changes and layout modifications
Characteristics of IFAL
- Relative speed
- Ease of application.
