 In the beginning, there was grass, and the sheep

ate the grass. The grass was short, and it was good.
But not very efficient So, until the 1830s, the few
landowners who had turf lawns and wanted keep
them trimmed used scythes or shears to chop turf
to acceptable heights.
 The first lawn mower was invented in 1830 by Edwin Beard
Budding, an engineer from Stroud, Gloucestershire, England. He
obtained the idea after seeing a machine in a local cloth mill which
used a cutting cylinder (or bladed reel) mounted on a bench to trim
cloth to make smooth finish after weaving. Budding realized that a
similar concept would enable the cutting of grass if the mechanism
could be mounted in a wheeled frame to make the blades rotate
close to the lawn’s surface. He went into partnership with a local
engineer, John Ferrabee, and together they made mowers in a
factory at Stroud. Examples of the early budding type mowers can
be seen in Stroud Museum, the London Science Museum and at
Milton Keynes Museum.
 Motorised mower appeared in 1890s as lightweight
petrol engines and small stem power units became
available. By 1900 petrol engined mowers were winning
in the market. Ransomes, Sims, Jefferies introduced a
petrol engine mower in 1902.
 A typical modern gasoline/petrol powered rotary ”push mower”
which has self-powered cutting blades, but still requires human
power to move across the ground. “walk-behind” mowers can
be self-propelled, only requiring a human to walk behind and
guide the mower.
 A residential riding or “ride-on” mower.
-Equipped so the operator can ride on the mower and control it.
 Elecric mowers are further subdivided into corded and cordless
electric models.
 Kind of Electric lawn mower
 Corded rotary lawn mower
 Cordless and rechargeable rotary lawn mower
 Other notable types of electric mower.
 Hower mower
 Robotic mower
 Corded electric lawn mower
-Are limited in range by their trailing power cord, which
may limit their use with lawns extending outward more
than 100-150 feet (30-45)from nearest available power
outlet.
 Cordless and rechargeable electric lawn
mower
-are powered by a variable number (typically 1-4) of
12-volt, 56-volt and 80-volt rechargeable batteries.
 Hower mower
-are powered rotary push lawn mowers that use an
impeller above the spinning blades to drive air
downward, thereby creating an air cushion that lifts
the mower above the ground.
 Robotic mower
-A robotic lawn mower(“lawn-mowing bot”,
“mowbot”, etc.) is designed to operate either entirely
on its own, or less commonly by an operator by
remote control. And its contained by a border wire
around the lawn that defines the area to be moved.
The robot uses this wire to locate the boundary of
the area to be trimmed and in some cases to locate a
recharging dock.
