Chemistry

Properties of metals

By Akiv
What are metals?

A metal is a material
that, when freshly
prepared, polished, or
fractured, shows a
lustrous appearance,
and conducts
electricity and heat
relatively well.
Physical state

Exception
-mercury

Sodium
and
Potassium
are soft
and can
easily be
cut with a
knife
Lustre

 Metallic lustre
Lustre is the way light interacts and
reflects off of a surface
Malleability

 Malleability
 Ability to convert into foils
or sheets by hammering
 Exceptions
 Arsenic
 Bismuth
 Antimony
Ductility

 Ductility
 Drawn into wires by
stretching

1 gram of gold can be

drawn 3240m long
Electrical conductivity

 Electrical conductivity
 Silver and Copper are good
conductors of electricity
 Exceptions-
 Mercury
 Lead
Thermal conductivity

 Thermal conductivity
When you
heat metal at
one end
it spreads to
the other that’s
why
They use it for
cooking
The thermal conductivity
of a material is a measure
of its ability to conduct
heat.
Density

 Density
How much space it takes
up (volume).
Light metals
Heavy metals are metals
that weigh more than 5grams
Sonority

 Sonority
Metals are sonorous
It occurs when a metal
strikes another metal
This property of metal is
helpful in making
bells,gongs and musical
instruments
