Overview of Engineering Design

 Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology
(ABET)
Engineering design is the process of devising a system,
component, or process to meet the desired needs. It is a
decision making process (often iterative), in which the basic
sciences, mathematics, and engineering sciences are applied
to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective.
Among the fundamental elements of the design process are
the establishment of objectives and criteria, synthesis,
analysis, construction, testing, and evaluation.

Example: Typical Undergraduate Problem Statement
Two wires are used to suspend an infinitely rigid
bar. The wires have yield strength of 220 MPa and
modulus of elasticity of 210 GPa. What is the
maximum load P that can be suspended from the
end of the bar such that the stress in a wire
does not exceed its yield value? What minimum
value of P causes yielding of both wires?

Example: “Real-World” Engineering Design Problem
RE: Structural Design of a Proposed Graduate Residence Building
Background: You have been retained by Client X to prepare a suitable
structural system for a new student residence on the campus of York
University. The intend of the structure is to accommodate students with
rooms of significant size and ultimate comfort.
Proposed Project: Find a suitable location on the campus of York University to
design a new student residence. A few constraints have been established at
the beginning of the project. The building will have four floors of residential
suites and a retail area occupying the ground floor. In addition, one
underground parking level is required. The building is to contain an inner
garden area that is exposed to sunlight. A maximum of 25 rooms per floor are
permitted, each containing an area of 4 × 4.5 m2, including an ensuite
bathroom. Each floor should contain a common kitchen and gathering area.
The shape and layout of the building has not been established and is up to
the design engineer’s discretion
