Selection
Endogamy

-from the Greek word “endon” which means


“within”
- Specifies the groups within which spouse must
be found and prohibits marriage with others
Exogamy
-from the Greek word “exo” which
means “outside”
- Requires mate selection outside
certain groups, usually one’s family
or certain folk
Incest Taboo

• A social norm common to virtually all


societies, prohibits sexual
relationships between certain
culturally specified relatives

• Monogamy – Each man
have only one wife at a
time, and each woman
may only have one
husband
• Polygamy – marriage in
which a person may have
more than one spouse at
a time

Marriage
1. Polygyny – allows a man to have
more than one wife at a time (islam)
2. Polyandry – a woman may have
more than one husband at a time
Legal Concept of Marriage
• Marriage is adopted pursuant to
Executive Order No. 209 approved
and signed into law by Corazon
Aquino on July 6,1987
Family Code of the Philippines defined
marriage as follows:
Marriage is a special contract of
permanent union between a man
and woman entered into in
accordance with law for the
established of conjugal and family
life [Article 1, Title I (titled Marriage)],
[Chapter 1(subtitled Requisites of
Marriage)]
Justice Malcolm says that “the basis
of human society throughout the
civilized world is that of marriage”

husband and wife
2. Parental Love – manifested in the desire for
children and in self-sacrificing care,
protection, and love of offspring.
3. Filial Love – attraction of child to father and
mother
4. Fraternal Love – love between siblings
