INTRODUCTION TO DAS/DAQ
 Electronics instrumentation and measurement.

 It is used to collect data from the real world physical

conditions and converting the resulting samples into
digital numeric values.

 It is form of treating data.

 Data Acquisition system includes different tools and

technology that are designed to accumulate data.

COMPONENTS OF THE BLOCK
DAIGRAM

 TRANSDUCER – It convert physical quantity to

electrical quantity
 SIGNAL CONDITIONING UNIT – It is the stage of
filtering, amplification and modification.
 MULTILEXING UNIT – It accept many signals and
gives a single output.
 A/D CONVERTER UNIT – It convert analog data to
digital data for easy processing and transmission

 DISPLAY AND RECORDER DEVICE – Data is displayed

in suitable form in order to monitor the input signals.
Eg – oscilloscope, numerical display etc.
Recorder device – data can be stored either
permanently or temporary. Eg – optical recorder,
ultraviolent recorder etc.

DAQ/DAS HARDWARE
Data acquisition hardware acts as the interface between the
computer and the outside world.

It primarily functions as a device that DIGITIZES incoming

ANALOG SIGNALS so that the computer can interpret them

DRIVER AND APPLICATION SOFTWARE

DRIVER SOFTWARE
 Software transforms the PC and the data acquisition
hardware into a complete data acquisition, analysis, and
presentation tool.

 Driver software is the layer of software for easily

communicating with the hardware

9/15/2019 13
APPLICATION SOFTWARE
Application software adds analysis and presentation
capabilities to driver software
NI offers three development environment software
products for creating complete instrumentation,
acquisition, and control applications

LABVIEW with graphical programming methodology

LABWINDOWS/CVI for traditional C programmers
MEASUREMENT STUDIO for Visual Basic, C++, and .NET

9/15/2019 14
APPLICATION SOFTWARE CONT’D

DAQExpress NI has introduced a configuration-based software

environment where programming is no longer a requirement.
Using DAQExpress, you can make interactive measurements
with NI Express technology.

MEASUREMENT APPLICATION

 The DAQ ASSISTANT, included with NI-DAQmx, is a

graphical, interactive guide for configuring, testing, and
acquiring measurement data
 DAQ ASSISTANT is completely menu-driven
 Individuals makes fewer programming errors and drastically
decrease the time from setting up your data acquisition system
to taking your first measurement

9/15/2019 17
ADVANTAGES OF DAS/DAQ
 Improved data access to users through use of host
and query languages

 Reduced updating errors and increased consistency

 Reduced data redundancy

9/15/2019 18
DISADVANTAGES OF DAS/DAQ

 Initial training required for all programmers and users

 Damage to database affects virtually all applications

programs

 Database systems are complex, difficult, and time-

consuming to design
