INTRODUCTION
Differential is an integral part of four wheelers.
A differential is used to allow the wheels to spin at different
speed.
Need of Differential

During turning-
The inner wheel cover less distance.
The outer wheel cover more distance.
Parts of Differential
1.Pinion gear
2.Ring gear
3.Side gear
4.Spider gear(Sun gear)
5. Differential case assembly
Working of Differential

From the drive shaft the power is transferred to the pinion

gear first and pinion and ring gear are meshed so power flows to
the Ring gear.
As the spider gear is connected with the ring gear so power
flows to it.
Finally from the spider gear the power transmitted to the side
gear.
Different cases:-
The vehicle moves straight
In this case the spider gear rotates along with
the ring gear but does not rotate on its own axis.
So the spider gear will push and make the side
gears turn, and both will turn at the same speed.
Vehicles takes a turn (right)
In this along with the rotation of ring gear , spider gear
rotates on its own axis.
When the spider gear is spinning as well as
rotating, peripheral velocity at the left side of spider gear is
the sum of the spinning and rotational velocity.
But at the right side,it is the difference of the two, since
the spin velocity is in the opposite direction at the side.
Vehicle takes a turn (left turn)
While taking a left turn, the right wheel should rotate
at a higher speed.
In this case , the velocity at the right side is sum of
spinning as well as rotaing.
But at the left side it is the difference of the two
because the spin velocity is opposite direction.
