Parts and

Functions of
the Heart
Pericardium
Gives protection against
infection, and provides the
lubrication for the heart.
Right Atrium
 The right atrium is one of the
four hollow chambers of the
interior of the heart. It is located
in the upper right corner of the
heart superior to the right
ventricle.
 Function as receiving chambers
for blood entering the heart.
Left Atrium
 The left atrium is one of the four
hollow chambers of the heart. It
plays the vital role of receiving
blood from the lungs via the
pulmonary veins and pumping it
to the left ventricle.
Right Ventricle
 Theright ventricle is the
chamber within the heart that is
responsible for pumping oxygen-
depleted blood to the lungs.
Left Ventricle
 Pumps blood to all parts of the
body.
 Blood supplies oxygen and
nutrients to all parts of the body.
At the same time, blood collects
wastes to be taken out of the
body.
Common
Heart
Diseases and
Disorders
Heart Attack
Occurs when blood clots
block the flow of blood to
the heart. The heart can be
seriously damaged when it
does not get enough blood.
Rheumatic Heart Disease
Weakens the heart due to
the inflammation of the
inner lining of the heart or
inability of a heart valve
(control the blood flow) to
close.
Congenital Heart Disease
 Refers to a defect in the heart
structure or major blood
vessels(a tubular structure
carrying blood through the
tissues and organs) that exist
at birth. This happens when
the mother gets sick during
the early stage of pregnancy.
